Lang scores late, Cubs hold off Orioles 8-7 in 2C playoffs
NEW ULM — Carter Lang scored the winning run for the Courtland Cubs in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday as they edged the Leavenworth Orioles 8-7 in the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament at Johnson Park.
In that eighth inning, Lang walked and eventually landed at third base. A combination of the walk and a wild pitch proved costly when Lang scored.
Courtland now plays Stark at 7 p.m. next Saturday in Springfield, with the winner earning a guaranteed trip to state. Leavenworth plays Fairfax at 7 p.m. Sunday in Springfield in elimination play.
The Orioles hurt themselves in the game with three errors and 11 stranded baserunners. Good defense, timely hitting and no errors committed by the Cubs were also all recipe for a win.
Courtland’s Cade Bushard doubled to the right-center field fence with one out in the bottom of the first inning. He scored on Teddy Giefer’s flyout to left field, sliding head-first across home plate for a 1-0 lead.
Chase Meyer got an infield single down the third base line. He scored on Jackson Bode’s single. Bode scored later on Cade Bushard’s single which made it 3-0 for Courtland after two innings.
Leavenworth answered with two runs of its own in the top of the third inning. Sam Pidde reached on a bunt single. Jackson Huiras reached on an infield single Pidde and Huiras cut the deficit to 3-2 on Jevan Richert’s double.
Courtland responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Jaden Drill reached on an error. Chase Meyer singled. Both players scored on a single by Evan Wiltscheck for a 5-2 Courtland advantage.
Huiras drew a four-pitch walk for Leavenworth in the top of the fifth inning. Jaden Mickelson belted a single to center which brought Huiras home, which made it 5-3 for Courtland.
Zach Mickelson had a double to left-center field in the top of the sixth inning for Leavenworth. He scored on an infield hit. It loaded the bases, but it was unable to score any more runs. Courtland led 5-4.
Courtland’s Nolan Drill hit a single in the bottom of the sixth inning. He scored Courtland’s sixth run on an infield single by Jaden Drill. Giefer reached on a single and scored on a single by Carter Lang. That made it 7-4 for Courtland.
Pidde got things started for Leavenworth in the top of the eighth inning. He reached on a third strike when the Courtland catcher could not track down the ball. Later, he evaded being caught in a run-down between first and second base. Spencer Hoffman’s single brought Pidde home. Richert walked. Leavenworth then added two additional runs to tie it at 7-7.
