TEL seeks 4th consecutive All-Star win over Corn Belt League on Saturday
SEARLES — This Saturday, the sixth Tomahawk East League vs. Corn Belt League All-Star Game will take center stage at Searles Ballpark as the TEL team looks for its fourth consecutive win in the series.
If this year’s showdown between the two teams is anything like the past three All-Star games, Searles could be in store for some extra baseball.
In 2018, the TEL team won in Milroy by a score of 4-3 in 12 innings and took the 2019 game 9-8 in 10 innings in Stark. The 2020 and 2021 games were canceled due to COVID-19, but the series returned to New Ulm last year, with the TEL team winning 2-1 in 11 innings after Stark’s Mason Cox took a bases-loaded walk to score Leavenworth’s Jevan Richert for the win at Johnson Park.
Zach Haala got the win on the mound in relief for the TEL team last year.
Haala and Cox are both scheduled to return to the field for this year’s All-Star Game, which begins at 5 p.m., alongside teammate Nick Labat. Also on this year’s TEL squad will be Courtland’s Jackson Bode, Cade Bushard and Nolan Drill, New Ulm’s J.T. Hoffmann, Colten Schaefer and Andrew Peters, Essig’s Erich Prokosch, Searles’ Kedar Schmitz and Josh Johnson, Gibbon’s Josh Wasmund, Sleepy Eye’s Jake Mielke, Hanska’s Chris Knowles, Sam Knowles and Branson Peterson, Springfield’s Tori Helget, Jordan Milbrath and Decker Scheffler, Lamberton’s Will Carlson and Leavenworth’s Jevan Richert and Jackson Huiras.
The TEL won the inaugural game in Bird Island in 2016 by a score of 7-5 before the Corn Belt team took the second game 5-1 in Springfield in 2017.
The TEL managers will be New Ulm’s Al Flor and Stark’s Dusty Mangen.
The Corn Belt team, managed by Raymond’s Butch Steen, Zach Nelson and Ron Hoekstra, will be led by seven players from the Raymond Rockets in Tyler Steen, Alex Call, Isaac Call, Ian Koosman, Wylee Lottman, Caleb Ditmarson and Mike Jeseritz. The Bird Island Bullfrogs will be represented by Dylan Gass, James Woelfel, Aidan Elfering, Logan Swann and Jordan Sagedahl, while Marshall will see Connor Neubeck, Charlie Jacobson, Seth Resnick and Logan Terfehr take the field. Also on the Corn Belt team this year will be Granite Falls’ Bennett Knapper, Sacred Heart’s Jack Howard, Milroy’s Jake Tauer and Branden Flock and Willmar’s Sam Etterman, Christian Lessman and Jack Baumgart.
Rounding out the Corn Belt team will be Carter Guetter and Adryen Tietz, the 2023 All-Journal Baseball Player of the Year and future Bethany Lutheran College Viking.
The TEL team will take batting practice at 3 p.m., followed by the Corn Belt League at 3:45 p.m.
This game will be free to attend, but fans are invited to support the concession stand. Caps will be given away in between innings, and pull tabs will be available.
