Area roundup: Sleepy Eye rolls on in 2A winner’s bracket

Sleepy Eye 9, Loyola 1

SLEEPY EYE — Top-seeded Sleepy Eye downed fourth-seeded Mankato Loyola 9-1 on Thursday in a Section 2A Baseball Tournament winner’s bracket game at Eagles Park.

The Indians trailed 1-0 heading into the sixth before scoring all nine of their runs in the sixth.

Cody Schultz was 1 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Indians, while Austin Uecker was 1 for 3 with two runs scored. Arian Saenz was 1 for 2 also for the Indians, while Nick Mielke and Winsten Nienhaus each had a hit and an RBI.

Martinez got the win for Sleepy Eye in relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings and allowing one hit and two walks for no runs while striking out three. Saenz started and allowed two hits and four walks for one earned run while fanning five.

The Indians play New Ulm Cathedral in the Section 2A Winner’s Bracket finals at 11 a.m. Saturday at ISG Field in Mankato.

Springfield 19, Madelia 3

SPRINGFIELD — No. 3-seeded Springfield bounced back from a playoff loss Tuesday to down seventh-seeded Madelia 19-3 in five innings of Section 2A Baseball Tournament elimination play Thursday.

The Tigers were led by Kade Nachreiner, who was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, while Jackson Ludewig was 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. MaCoy Krick doubled and drove in two runs for Springfield also, while Russell Beers doubled and Danny Rogotzke had a hit and two RBIs. Jakob Nachreiner also had a hit, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Tigers.

Kade Nachreiner got the win in all five innings, allowing nine hits and a walk for three earned runs while striking out seven.

Tony Zaleski was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead Madelia, while Eric Anderson and Dylan Grev each went 2 for 3. Zach Jacobs added a double.

Grev took the loss in 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits and a walk.

Springfield moves on in the elimination bracket and plays Mankato Loyola/Immanuel Lutheran at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at ISG Field in Mankato, while Madelia ends its season with a 13-9 record.

St. Mary’s 6, MCW 5

SLEEPY EYE — Fifth-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s battled back to pick up a 6-5 win over eighth-seeded Martin County West on Thursday in the Section 2A Baseball Tournament elimination bracket.

Talan Helget got the win in an inning of relief, striking out two.

Jonny Petermann was 3 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Knights at the plate, while Mark Anderson was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Kessler Severson was 2 for 4 and Owen Weiss was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Peterman singled in the tying run in the seventh before Brandon Schmitz was hit by a pitch to bring in the game-winning run.

St. Mary’s plays Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at ISG Field in Mankato.

PREP SOFTBALL

Edgerton 5, Wabasso 4

MARSHALL — Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian held off Wabasso 5-4 on Thursday in the Section 3A Baseball Tournament finals.

Avery Carlson took the loss in six innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits and a walk while fanning one.

The Rabbits trailed 5-0 before scoring four in the seventh, but Edgerton held on to earn a trip to the state tournament.

Avery Carlson and Kelsey Frank each had a hit and an RBI for Wabasso, while Sara Carlson doubled.

The Rabbits finish their 2023 season with a 19-8 record.
