Schommer, Grizzlies hold off Brewers

NEW ULM — It was a game that will raise some eyebrows around the Tomahawk East League.

Tony Geiger’s two-out single in the top of the eighth inning scored Kasey Kuck to break a 3-3 tie and reliever Mark Schommer struck out eight of the nine batters he faced in relief as the Searles Grizzlies stunned the New Ulm Brewers 4-3 Monday afternoon in a TEL amateur baseball game at Johnson Park.

Schommer earned the win for Searles, now 2-1 in TEL play.

Chris Cariveau was charged with the loss for the Brewers, now 1-1 in TEL play.

Josh Johnson led the Searles offense with three hits, including a game-tying three-run home run off New Ulm starter Adam Slander.

Andrew Peters had two hits for the Brewers.

“This is a big win for us,” Searles manager Collin Helget said. “Everyone looks up to New Ulm — we know that they are a good team — but we have seen earlier in the year what we are capable off.”

Searles starter Mark Rieger held the Brewers bats in check in the six innings that he pitched.

He allowed all eight Brewers hits but did not allow New Ulm to put up a crooked number on the scoreboard.

“He pitched a heck of a game,” Helget said. “All we asked of him was to throw strikes and that was what he did. He did a good job of attacking the zone and getting ground balls.”

The Brewers scored single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings.

An Adam Nilson double, a double from Jordan Guggisberg and a Josh Seidl sacrifice fly that scored Peters, who had tripled, gave New Ulm a 3-0 lead.

But in the seventh inning, the Grizzlies got to Slander.

Casey Lux and Landon Barstad singled with one out.

Josh Johnson then hammered Slander’s first pitch over the fence in left to tie the game.

“I had told Josh that I was going to leave him toward the bottom of the lineup (eighth in the order) and get some pop down there,” Helget said. “And he came up and put a nice swing on it.”

Searles followed that with the eventual game-winning run off of Cariveau in the eighth.

Kuck singled and was awarded second on a balk by Cariveau.

Geiger, who had struck out in his three previous plate appearances, then lined an RBI single to center for a 4-3 lead.

And Schommer did the rest, fanning eight straight batters before he ended the game on a groundout.

“We know that Mark is not going to be around much this summer, but when he was, he wanted the ball,” Helget said. “He shut the door for us.”

The Brewers return to action this Friday and Saturday at Johnson Park with games against Atwater and Baseball 365. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.

Searles is at Sleepy Eye for a 1 p.m. TEL game Sunday.

Starting at $4.50/week.
