Area roundup: Eagles ride storm out, down Saints

PREP SOFTBALL

New Ulm 12, St. Peter 0 (5 innings)

NEW ULM — Despite a 45-minute rain delay, the New Ulm Eagles didn’t let that impact them much as they rode the storm out for a 12-0 win over the St. Peter Saints in five innings of Big South Conference softball at New Ulm High School.

Ramsey Hopp got the win in all five innings, giving up just one hit and no walks while striking out eight. Lauren Schmiesing was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Eagles at the plate, while Calyn Glaser was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Brya Aschenbrenner was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and Amber Lee was 1 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.

Berkley Wilfahrt also scored three runs, an RBI and a stolen base.

New Ulm has a makeup nonconference game scheduled at Owatonna on Tuesday.

St. Mary’s 9, Springfield 4

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Springfield 9-4 on Monday in a Tomahawk Conference softball game.

Lacey Mathiowetz got the complete-game win in the circle, giving up five hits, two walks and striking out seven. She also was 3 for 3 at the plate to lead the Knights, while Kallie Zarn was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Alexa Pelzel was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and Addie Hoffmann was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Jalivia Richert took the loss in the circle for the Tigers, giving up nine runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out six. Rachel Beadell led the Tigers at the plate, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Richert, Brenna Pabst and Emma Hauger each had a hit.

Springfield hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday, while St. Mary’s travels to take on Martin County West on Tuesday.

Fairmont 5, LCWM 0 (5 innings)

LAKE CRYSTAL — Fairmont defeated Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 5-0 in rain-shortened five inning game on Monday in a nonconference softball game.

Avery Voges had nine strikeouts while allowing four hits and one earned run for the Knights. Julia Montgomery and Voges had the teams’ only hits.

LCWM (13-2) plays a doubleheader at Pipestone Area on Tuesday.

Wabasso 10, MVL 0 (6 innings)

WABASSO — Wabasso downed Minnesota Valley Lutheran in a Tomahawk Conference softball matchup on Monday 10-0 in six innings.

Avery Carlson got the win in the circle for the Rabbits, getting eight strikeouts while giving up two hits. Avery Carlson was also 3 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and three runs scored, while Sophia Hanna was 2 for 4 with a triple and a homerun and two RBIs. Sara Carlson was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, while Lyla Kittelson and Callie Burns were each 2 for 3.

Becca Kuck took the loss for the Chargers, getting five strikeouts while allowing 14 hits and four earned runs. Sophie Dalueg had a hit in the game for MVL.

Sleepy Eye 18, GFW 0 (4 innings)

WINTHROP — Sleepy Eye downed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 18-0 in four innings of a Tomahawk Conference softball game on Monday.

Sleepy Eye was led by Brooke Arneson, who was 3 for 4 with a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Katelyn Tauer was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Also for the Indians, Brissa Hernandez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Julia Berkner was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Tauer got the win in the circle also for the Indians.

No stats were reported for GFW.

Sleepy Eye travels to Truman for a nonconference game Tuesday, while GFW is at Redwood Valley for nonconference action Tuesday.

PREP BASEBALL

Madelia 14, St. Clair 1 (5 innings)

ST. CLAIR — Madelia rolled past St. Clair 14-1 in five innings on Monday in a Valley Conference baseball game on Monday.

Dylan Grev picked up the win for Madelia, getting four strikeouts while allowing one hit and one earned run in three innings pitched. Grev was also 2 for 4 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Tate Becker had a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Jake Lehman was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Zach Jacobs was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Madelia hosts Cleveland on Tuesday.

Springfield 6, St. Mary’s 3

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield defeated St. Mary’s 6-3 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Monday after a rain delay in the second inning.

Kaden Nachreiner picked up the win for the Tigers, getting six strikeouts while allowing seven hits, three earned runs and two walks in 6 1/3 innings pitched. At the plate for Springfield, Ethan Louwagie was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored, while Jakob Nachreiner was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a triple.

Brandon Schmitz was handed the loss for St. Mary’s, getting four strikeouts while allowing five hits and five earned runs. Talan Helget was 3 for 3 with a run scored for the Knights, while Owen Weiss was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Springfield travels to Cathedral on Thursday. St. Mary’s travels to Martin County West on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye 9, GFW 3

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye took down Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 9-3 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Monday.

Marcus Martinez got the win on the mound for Sleepy Eye, getting eight strikeouts while allowing two hits and no earned runs in four innings pitched. Jake Price was 2 for four with a triple and four RBIs for the Indians, while Cody Schultz had a double and an RBI.

Layton Uecker-Hamre was handed the loss for the Thunderbirds, getting three strikeouts and giving up four hits, six runs and five walks in 3 2/3 innings. Mikal Nordlund was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for GFW, while Ryan Hoffmann had a hit and an RBI.

Sleepy Eye will travel to Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Tuesday. GFW hosts Martin County West on Friday.

Wabasso 2, MVL 0

WABASSO — Wabasso held on for a 2-0 shutout win over Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday in Tomahawk Conference baseball action.

Adryen Tietz picked up the complete-game win, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out 19. He also had three hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored for the Rabbits, who also got two hits and two RBIs from Joe Liebl and a hit and stolen base from Ethan Jenniges.

Bradyn Kube took the loss in six innings of work, giving up seven hits and no walks for two earned runs while fanning eight.

Wabasso hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday at 5 p.m., while MVL hosts Sleepy Eye at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Mueller Park.

BOYS TENNIS

Mankato West 4, New Ulm 1

MANKATO — Mankato West defeated New Ulm 4-1 in a nonconference boys tennis meet on Monday. Two matches were incomplete due to weather.

No. 4 singles Keenan Davis defeated Raymond Zhao 6-4, 6-3 for the team’s only point.

BOYS GOLF

St. Peter boys 288, BEA 326, Fairmont 329, Waseca 333, New Ulm 345, JCC 349

ST. PETER — St. Peter fininshed in first with a score of 326 as the Big South Conference East Division completed third leg of their Conference Golf Tournament on Monday. Blue Earth Area finished second with 326, followed by Fairmont (329), Waseca (333), New Ulm (345) and Jackson County Central (349).

St. Peter’s Kaiden Brovold finished in first with a 68. New Ulm’s low scores were Mason Buegler in 14th with an 83, Gavin Epper tied for 17th win an 87, and Will Fossen tied for 20th with an 87.

GIRLS GOLF

Wilker has low score for Eagles in rainy 3rd leg

BLUE EARTH — The third leg of the Big South Conference East Division Girl Golf Tournament was shaken up due to rain, with the majority of the teams completing just 16 holes.

Fairmont shot +65 overall through 15 holes to lead the way.

New Ulm completed 16 holes of the meet, led by Katie Wilker’s +27 score over 17 holes. Sophia Cooke shot +37 over 16 holes for New Ulm, while Elyse Dreckman shot +39 over 16 and Brooklyn Hagberg shot +41 over 16.
