Area roundup: Chargers clinch Tomahawk title

BOYS BASKETBALL

MVL 86, Cedar Mountain 50

MORGAN — Minnesota Valley Lutheran placed four players in double figures as it downed Cedar Mountain 86-50 on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference boys basketball game.

With the win, MVL clinched sole possession of the Tomahawk Conference Championship.

Ben Pearson led the Chargers with 19 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Cole Thompson had 17 points and five rebounds, while Aaron Black added 15 points and seven rebounds. Kyle Flunker also had 15 points, three rebounds, five steals and one assist.

Blake Steffl led the Cougars with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Brandon Pendleton had 12 points. Dakota Pendleton-Sam added 9 points and five rebounds.

MVL (20-3, 15-1) will host LeSueur-Henderson on Monday. Cedar Mountain (9-12, 6-8) will play at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Monday.

BLHS 83, Sleepy Eye 53

SLEEPY EYE — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart downed Sleepy Eye 83-53 in a Tomahawk Conference boys basketball game Friday night.

Landon Wendinger led the Indians with 16 points, five rebounds and four blocks, while Brayden Heiderscheidt added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Sleepy Eye (7-17, 3-13) will travel to Lamberton to take on Red Rock Central on Monday.

St. Mary’s 81, GFW 59

WINTHROP — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s cruised by Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference boys basketball game.

Will Walter led the Knights with 27 points (which included four 3s), Kaleb Wait had 23 points 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Jon Petermann added 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Mark Anderson added 8 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Owen Weiss scored 8 points.

Alex Johnson led the Thunderbirds with 17 points, Dominic Rose had 12 points and Cole Jacobson scored 10 points.

SESM (13-3, 14-2) will play at Mayer Lutheran on Friday. GFW (11-14, 6-10) will host Nicollet (2-21, 2-14) on Monday.

Springfield 84,

Wabasso 51

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield had five players score in double figures on Friday as it ran past Wabasso in a Tomahawk Conference boys basketball game.

Brayden Sturm led the Tigers with 25 points, six assists and four steals. Bryan Buerkle had 16 points , six rebounds and four assists. Noah Vogel added 15 points. MaCoy Krick had 10 points and Aiden Moriarty scored 10 points and he had six rebounds and two assists.

Springfield (12-11, 11-5)will host Windom Area on Tuesday. Wabasso (4-18, 3-12) will host Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cleveland 58,

Cathedral 37

NEW ULM — Cleveland defeated New Ulm Cathedral on Friday in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Shay Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds with 12 points while Jenna Hotovec and Margo Finstad scored 7 points apiece.

Cathedral (7-18, 4-12) will play at Sibley East on Monday.

Springfield 48, TMB 46

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield edged Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Friday in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Brooklyn Sturm led the Tigers with 25 points, five rebounds and three steals. Marissa Pabst scored 9 points and she had six rebounds. Jasmine Novotny added 8 points and four rebounds.

Springfield (12-11, 7-9) will play at Windom Area on Tuesday.

Cedar Mountain 60,

Madelia 29

MADELIA — Cedar Mountain cruised by Madelia 60-29 Friday night in a Tomahawk Conference girls basketball game.

Katherine DeVlaeminck led the Blackhawks with 7 points and five rebounds, while Ella Bergeman added 6 points, three steals and five rebounds. Ollie Glover also had 5 points and nine rebounds for Madelia.

No stats were reported for Cedar Mountain.

Sleepy Eye 63,

EAST CHAIN — Sleepy Eye bested Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 63-31 in a nonconference girls basketball game Friday night.

Kadance Hesse led the Indians with 25 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists. Brea Mertz added 16 points and five steals, while Cadence Okerman had 8 points and four assists. Paige Haala also scored 7 points.

Sleepy Eye (19-6, 12-3) will host Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday.
