Area roundup: Red Bulls top Eagles in 3AA tourney, New Ulm sends 2 gymnasts to state

NUA goes 1-1 in 3AA Tourney

SHERBURN — New Ulm Area downed Redwood Valley 42-25 on Thursday during the Section 3AA Team Wrestling Meet at Martin County West High School before falling to the Martin County Red Bulls 53-18 to be eliminated from the tournament.

In the win over Redwood Valley, New Ulm got wins from Kane Johnson, Alex Portner, Elijah Rieser, Jamisen Frederickson, Lane Ruch, Wyatt Pollard, Ty Frederick and Evan Thompson.

NUA got wins from Braxton Kiecker, Ty Frederick and Thompson against the Red Bulls, who now take on Marshall on Saturday in the semifinals.

PREP GYMNASTICS

New Ulm finishes second at 2A Championship

ST. JAMES — The New Ulm gymnastics team finished its time in the Section 2A Championship Meet on Thursday as runner-ups with a score of 134.175.

Mankato West won the meet with a 144.6, finishing ahead of New Ulm, St. Peter (130.6), Waseca (129.35), Blue Earth Area (128.25), Martin County Area (123.675), St. James (97.775) and Faribault (57.625).

Ella Freiderich and Olivia Eckstein turned in the top performances for the Eagles on Thursday and qualified for the state tournament as a result. Freiderich qualified for state on floor, while Eckstein qualified on beam.

Freiderich took fifth all-around with a score of 34.6. Her 9.075 on floor was good enough for fifth place and a trip to state. Eckstein’s fifth-place finish on beam (8.95) qualified her for state.

Freiderich also tied for fifth on bars (8.275), while Jocelyn Sellner took ninth on bars (8.1). Sellner finished seventh all-around (33.675), while Eckstein finished ninth all-around (33.2).

BOYS BASKETBALL

BOLD 88, Springfield 62

BIRD ISLAND — BOLD cruised by Springfield 88-62 Thursday in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Brayden Sturm led the Tigers with 16 points, seven assists and three steals. Bryan Buerkle added 14 points and Noah Vogel scored 13 points.

Springfield (11-11, 10-5) will host Wabasso (4-17, 3-11) on Friday.

Mankato Loyola 72, Nicollet 38

NICOLLET — Mankato Loyola rolled past Nicollet 72-38 Thursday in a Valley Conference boys basketball game.

Jeffrey Volby led the Raiders with 13 points, while Grant Bruns added 10 points and Jonny Peterson had 6 points.

Nicollet (2-21, 2-14) will play at LeSueur-Henderson on Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Windom Area 85, MVL 56

NEW ULM — Windom Area defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 85-56 Thursday in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Ella Mullenbach led the Chargers with 22 points and six steals, while Mackenzie Merseth had 13 points and nine rebounds. Abby Hartwig had 6 points and four rebounds, and Becca Kuck added 6 points and four rebounds.

MVL (1-22, 0-15) will play at Redwood Valley on Monday.

SESM 76, MCW 54

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s took down Martin County West 76-54 Thursday in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Allie Labat led the Knights with 26 points, seven rebounds, six steals and two assists. Morgan Mathiowetz chipped in 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists and eight steals while Liz Schwint had 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Natalie Fischer added 9 points for the Knights.

Kari Matejka led the Mavericks with 14 points, while Emily Anderson scored 10 points and Thea Anderson added 8 points.

St. Mary’s (19-5, 12-4) will host Granada Huntley/East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Tuesday.
