Wilfahrt reflects on passing 1,000 career points for CHS

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral’s Jevan Wilfahrt admitted that he did not sleep well Friday night after his 25-point performance in the Greyhounds’ 56-41 win over Sleepy Eye Public.

“I am not going to lie,” the 6-4 junior said Saturday afternoon. “I was pretty nervous — I couldn’t really fall asleep and I woke up early. I was nervous all day.”

The reason that Wilfahrt was a little apprehensive was because he knew he was just 18 points away from his 1,000th career point for the Greyhounds.

Wilfahrt likely slept a lot better Saturday night after he scored 27 points in Cathedral’s 54-50 win over Wabasso Saturday afternoon.

Wilfahrt became the 17th high school basketball player from Holy Trinity/New Ulm Cathedral to reach the milestone.

He passed 1,000 points off of a Wabasso turnover that he turned into a dunk with 1:43 left in the first half.

Wilfahrt said that passing 1,000 career points carried special meaning.

“It meant a lot to me because of how much work I have put in with my teammates over the summer,” Wilfahrt said. “This was the milestone I was hoping to hit and I want to continue to improve on it.”

While most players get their 1,000th career point on a jump shot or a layup, Wilfahrt’s came on a slam dunk — a shot Wilfahrt had in mind before the game.

“When it happened, it was surreal and I did not think that it actually happened,” Wilfahrt said. “It just dawned on me that I had scored my 1,000th career point.”

Wilfahrt said that he gives a lot of credit for his success to former Cathedral basketball player Jon Zinniel, Cathedral’s all-time leading scorer with 1,700 points.

“I put in a lot of work with him over the summer and he mentored me and put me on this path,” said Wilfahrt. “He encouraged me to continue to grow and try and beat his record. My goal is to break that — I have more games this year and all of next season.”

Wilfahrt now has 1,009 career points and counting.

Wilfahrt becomes the second high school basketball player in New Ulm to cross the 1,000-point threshold this season, joining another junior, New Ulm High School’s Colton Benson.
