SLEEPY EYE — Morgan Mathiowetz’s baseline buzzer-beater lifted Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s over Lester Prairie 68-66 on Friday night in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Liz Schwint led the Knights with 21 points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists. Mathiowetz added 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while Allie Labat recorded 11 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Addison Hoof scored 30 for Lester Prairie.

St. Mary’s (9-4, 5-4) will host Wabasso on Tuesday.

SJA 78, MVL 38

ST. JAMES — St. James Area defeated MVL 78-38 on Friday night in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Taylor Sodeman paced SJA with 25 points. Madelyn Malgrem added 22 more points for the Saints.

Ella Mullenbach led the Chargers with 17 points. Kerigan Brau had 8 points, while Becca Kuck scored 6 points. Mackenzie Merseth contributed 6 points and five rebounds.

SJA (8-6, 2-4) will travel to play New Ulm Cathedral on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. MVL (1-12, 0-7) will play Cathedral on Monday.

Sleepy Eye 57, Springfield 34

SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye downed Springfield 57-34 on Friday night in a Tomahawk Conference girls basketball game.

Sleepy Eye was led by Brea Mertz’s 20 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Kadence Hesse had 19 points, five rebounds and three steals. Jazzibelle Martinez added 8 points and three assists, while Paige Haala had 6 points and four rebounds.

For Springfield, Katie Thram had 8 points, while Brooklyn Sturm had 7 points and three steals and Maddy Digmann had 6 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Springfield (7-5, 5-4) travels to Olivia to take on BOLD Monday, while Sleepy Eye (11-5, 7-2) is at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday.

Alden-Conger 70,

Madelia 53

MADELIA — Alden-Conger bested Madelia 70-53 on Friday night in a Valley Conference girls basketball game.

Ollie Glover had a team-high 14 points for the Blackhawks to go along with three steals and three blocks. Alicia Lugo recorded 11 points and nine rebounds, while Victoria Hemmingson scored 10 points for Madelia.

Madelia (2-13, 0-10) will travel to Lake Crystal to play Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Monday.

GFW 62, Wabasso 59

WINTHROP — GFW defeated Wabasso 62-59 in a Tomahawk Conference girls basketball game on Friday night.

Jenna Schweiss paced the Thunderbirds with 21 points and six steals. Marti Jacobson added 18 points, while Brynn Busse scored 15 points for GFW.

Kelsey Frank had the high score for Wabasso with 34 points, while Avery Carlson had 7 points and nine assists.

GFW (7-7, 3-3) will host Sleepy Eye Public on Monday. Wabasso (5-8, 3-5) will travel to take on SESM on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

GFW 67, Wabasso 65

WINTRHOP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Wintrhop downed Wabasso 67-65 in a Tomahawk Conference boys basketball game on Friday night.

Ashton Buboltz let GFW with 18 points, with Dominic Rose adding 16 points of his own. Easton Taylor also had 11 points.

Wabasso was led by Karson Bock with 17 points, while Calvin Hanna scored 13 points for the Rabbits.

GFW (8-5, 4-3) will play Minnesota Valley Lutheran in New Ulm on Monday. Wabasso (3-10, 2-5) will travel to Sleepy Eye to take on Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

MVL 80, BEA 60

BLUE EARTH — Minnesota Valley Lutheran took down Blue Earth Area 80-60 on Friday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.

MVL was led by Ben Pearson’s 21 points, while Cole Thompson had 16 points and Kyler Flunker added 13.

MVL (10-3) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday night.

MCW 69, Nicollet 30

TRIMONT — Martin County West topped Nicollet 69-30 on Friday night in a Valley Conference boys basketball game.

Grant Burns had the high score for the Raiders with 14 points, followed by Conner Martens’ 7 and Cody Strunk’s 6.

Nicollet (1-12, 1-7) will travel to Truman to take on Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain on Tuesday.

Loyola 70, Madelia 34

MADELIA — Mankato Loyola topped Madelia 70-34 on Friday night in a Valley Conference boys basketball game.

Madelia was led by Josiah DeMaris’ 11 points and nine rebounds.

Madelia (2-10) hosts Heron Lake/Okabena/Fulda on Monday.

Cedar Mountain 77, BLHS 56

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 77-56 on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference boys basketball game.

Dakota Pendleton Sam had 23 points, seven assists and seven rebounds to lead the Cougars in the win, while Branndon Pendleton had 15 points and Blake Schueller had 13 points and 15 rebounds.

No stats were reported for BLHS.

Cedar Mountain (5-5, 3-2) is at Springfield on Tuesday, while BLHS (4-9, 3-4) hosts Lester Prairie on Tuesday.

PREP GYMNASTICS

New Ulm 132.275, St. James 94.1

ST. JAMES — The New Ulm gymnastics team rolled to a 132.275-94.1 win over St. James on Friday in a Big South Conference gymnastics meet.

New Ulm’s Ella Freiderich (33.875), Josie Sellner (33.1), Olivia Eckstein (32.825) and Emma Radloff (32.275) led all gymnasts all-around. Radloff took first on vault (8.625), while Sophia Berger took second (8.5) and Eckstein took third (8.475). On bars, Freiderich took first (8.15), Sellner took second (7.95) and Radloff took third (7.925).

On beam, Eckstein took first (8.9), Sellner took second (8.425) and Freiderich took third (8.375). On floor, Freiderich took first (8.925), Sellner took second (8.325) and Eckstein took third (8.3).
