Cantwell’s hatty leads Steel past WarHawks

WILLMAR — Behind Gus Cantwell’s hat trick, the New Ulm Steel rolled to a 6-3 win over the Willmar WarHawks on Friday night in an NA3HL game.

Trailing 2-0 after the first period, the Steel got on the board early in the second period on a goal from Griffin Lennes that was assisted on by Cooper Kantola and Blake Biermaier. Aidan Swee scored unassisted for the Steel to tie the game up at the 8:25 mark of the second period.

Gus Cantwell put the Steel ahead less than five minutes later in the second period on a goal that was assisted on by Nicholas O’Brien and Johnny Thrasher, but the WarHawks knotted the game up late in the second period on a goal from Tyler Misialek.

The Steel then got the go-ahead goal from Bryce Hall, assisted on by Conner Souza and Thrasher, before Cantwell added his second goal of the night on an assist from Charlie Kielty and Jack Laser.

Cantwell then scored an empty-netter late in the third period on an assist from Kantola and Lahoussine Salama. The empty-netter was Cantwell’s 20th goal of the season.

Steel goalie Dixon Ehlers stopped 38 saves in net in the win. Both teams were 0 for 4 on the power play.

The teams rematch again Saturday night at the New Ulm Civic Center.
