NUA finishes 4th at Don Hill Invite

GLENCOE — The New Ulm Area wrestling team took fourth at the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie Don Hall Invite on Saturday, led by heavyweight Evan Thompson’s first-place finish.

Thompson pinned Kimball Area’s Kade Gassler in 42 seconds in quarterfinals action before pinning Rochester John Marshall’s Jacob Hansen in 1:11. Thompson then defeated Jackson County Central’s Cameron Scholten by fall in 3:05 to take first.

NUA’s Kane Thompson (106) also had a strong showing at the Invite, finishing second. Johnson defeated Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s Jent Breyer by a 4-3 decision before pinning Watertown/Mayer Lutheran’s Sully Marx in 5:42 to advance to the championship match against Watertown/ML’s Joel Friederichs, where Friederichs picked up a 21-7 major decision.

Winsten Nienhaus also finished second for NUA at 145 pounds, defeating GSL/LP’s Mason Schilling by a 7-3 decision and Kimball Area’s Blake Brutger by an 11-1 major decision. Thomas Freking of JCC then defeated Nienhaus in the first-place match by an 11-5 decision.

Taking third for the Eagles on Saturday was Logan Lee (138, 3-1, one fall) and Kelten Willaert (285, 3-1, two falls).
