Two-run 7th earns Lightning win in battle with Brewers

FARIBAULT — The Nisswa Lightning scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie as Nisswa topped the New Ulm Brewers 4-2 Saturday night in Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Bell Field.

After breaking the tie, reliever Brett Kramer made it stand up and got credit for the win.

Wade French took the loss that saw New Ulm end their season at 31-4.

French went seven innings ,allowing four runs on seven hits while fanning six.

Mitch Bockenstedt pitched an inning and struck out one.

Jaden Domeier paced New Ulm with two hits. Trevor Nissen homered for the Brewers.

Nisswa took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Kody Ruedisili singled and stole second. He raced home on a Nic Nelson double.

The Brewers tied the game in the fourth when Hunter Ranweiler singled and swiped second. Jaden Domeier drew a two-out walk before Andrew Peters brought in Ranweiler with a single.

Both teams used the long ball for solo home runs to scored their next runs.

Aaron Jones’ solo blast in the fourth inning gave Nisswa the 2-1 lead.

Trevor Nissen tied the game in the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer over the fence in left.

Nisswa then scored two runs in the seventh. Matt Casperson coaxed a one-out walk.

An infield throwing error placed Lightning batters on second and third.

A Nelson sacrifice fly and a Jeremiah Piepkorn single to center made it 4-2.

It was a game where the Brewers had scoring chances in the second inning and again in the fifth.

In the fifth, Colton Schaefer led off with a walk off of Nisswa starter Ryan Chmielewski. He took second on a passed ball, but the Brewers could not get Schaefer in.

In the seventh, Jordan Guggisberg led off with a pinch-hit single and took second on a Schaefer sacrifice bunt but could not get that key hit.

New Ulm’s last scoring chance came in the eighth when Hunter Ranweiler drew a lead-off walk. Jaden Domeier doubled with two outs but Kramer got the final out on a strikeout.
