SLEEPY EYE — Sean Mathiowetz’s full-count, two-out, bases-loaded double in the top of the eighth inning drove in three runs, helping Stark top Courtland 6-3 in a Region 2C amateur baseball elimination playoff game at Sleepy Eye Monday.

“I just wanted to put the ball in play,” Mathiowetz said after the game. “I finally got the (bat) barrel on it.”

“It was a huge hit in a great at bat,” said Stark manager Dusty Mangen.

Adam Sellner fanned 11 Courtland batters in the game that eliminated the Cubs from the tournament. Stark plays Springfield at 7:30 p.m. Friday in another region elimination game in Sleepy Eye. Springfield topped Hanska 5-0 Monday in Fairfax.

“Turning 30 is a little different than 22. My arm hurts,” said Sellner after the complete-game win.

Stark led 3-0 after two innings, bunching three runs on hits by David Surprenant and Mason Cox in the second. Nick Labat and Tim Seifert walked in the second to set the table.

Surprenant had two hits in the game.

Courtland battled back, pulling within 3-1 in the fourth on Nolan Drill’s solo home run to left-center. The Cubs got within 3-2 in the sixth on hits by Cade Bushard, Nolan Drill and Chase Meyer.

Courtland tied the game in the seventh on an infield error and Jackson Bode’s bunt for a hit. Stark’s double play limited the damage.

The Cubs threatened in the ninth on a double by Maddox Mortenson, but Sellner worked out of the inning, grabbing a ball hit by Bode and throwing him out at first. Bushard flew out to center to end the game.

Chase Meyer pitched 5 2/3 innings for Courtland, allowing three runs on four hits. He fanned seven but the Cubs committed three errors.

Cole Backer finished on the mound for Courtland.

“Too many errors (4),” Courtland manager John Giefer said. “It’s a learning curve.”

Mortenson and Nolan Drill had two hits for Courtland.

Stark made three errors in the game.
