Sleepy Eye Jr. Legion tops Morris, moves on to consolation title game

ELY — Sleepy Eye Junior Legion rebounded from a tough 1-0 loss on Thursday to take down Morris 5-2 in the consolation bracket of the Division 2 Junior Legion Baseball State Tournament Friday.

The win moves Sleepy Eye on to the consolation title game with Ely at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

Brandon Schmitz pitched 6 2/3 innings for Sleepy Eye in the win, giving up seven hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out eight.

Sleepy Eye took a 1-0 lead in the first after Caden Evers drew a bases-loaded walk to score Cody Schultz. Mark Anderson led off the second inning with a single and was later brought home on a sac fly from Winsten Nienhaus for a 2-0 Sleepy Eye lead.

In the fifth inning, Morris got its leadoff hitter on, but Schmitz got a strikeout and turned a line-drive double play to end the threat. The sixth inning saw Sleepy Eye score three more runs, led by Austin Uecker’s sac fly.

Schmitz was pulled with two outs in the sixth due to the pitch count limit and was relieved by Talan Helget. Morris loaded the bases and scored on a walk and an infield single, by Helget forced a groundout for the final out.

Anderson led Sleepy Eye at the plate, going 2 for 2 with two runs scored. Winsten Nienhaus drove in two runs also.
