Legion Gold goes 1-4 at Omaha tourney

BELLEVUE, Neb. — The New Ulm Legion Gold baseball team went 1-4 at the Battle of Omaha Tournament, finishing the tournament on Saturday.

On Thursday, the Wichita Aeros defeated Gold 8-6, while Harrisburg, Ill. topped Gold 6-1.

In the loss to Wichita, Blaine Olson took the loss in 5 1/3 innings, giving up four unearned runs on three hits and two walks while fanning one. Jace Schaefer was 2 for 2 for Gold, while Adam Wiltscheck was 2 for 3, Levi Franta was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Evan Wiltscheck was 2 for 4. Carter Lang had a hit and drove in three runs also.

Against Harrisburg, Franta took the loss in five innings, giving up three hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out three. Justin Berg was 2 for 3 to lead Gold at the plate, while Maddox Mortensen was 2 for 4.

On Friday, Gold defeated the Kansas Senators Post 421 by a score of 7-2 and then fell to Gross Catholic 9-1.

Against Kansas, Lang got the complete-game win, giving up four hits and a walk for one earned run while striking out seven. He also led the Gold bats, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Grant Bruns was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Franta was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

In the loss to Gross Catholic, Josh Giefer took the loss in 3 1/3 innings of work, giving up seven hits and a walk for two earned runs while fanning two. Mortensen and Lang each had a single for Gold’s two hits in the game.

On Saturday, Brooklawn defeated Gold 9-5. Bruns took the loss in three innings, giving up four hits and three walks for five earned runs while striking out one. Lang again was Gold’s top hitter, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Giefer was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while Mortensen and Adam Wiltscheck each went 2 for 4. Mortensen’s hits were both doubles.

Gold travels to Jordan next for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday.
