VFW Gold shuts out Mankato West
NEW ULM — With five of his top players in Omaha with the New Ulm Legion Gold team, New Ulm VFW Gold coach Collin Helget did not know what to expect in their game against the Mankato West Junior Legion Thursday night.
What he got had to put a smile on his face.
Left-hander Kaden Larson held West bats to five hits and New Ulm used three sacrifice bunts to set up scores as VFW Gold and Larson blanked Mankato 6-0 in the second game of the Junior Upper Midwest Classic.
Larson struck out eight and did not walk a batter in getting the complete game win.
Kaylor Chamberlain took the loss for West. He went three innings and allowed three runs.
Larson led New Ulm with three hits, with Zach Riederer adding two hits.
Riederer drove in two runs.
VFW Gold, who plays Osseo at 7 p.m. Friday night at Johnson Park, scored two runs in the second inning using the first of three sacrifice bunts to score.
Gaven Epper and Cody Serbus singled to start off the inning and a Brock Wellmann bunt moved them both into scoring position.
A Jake Finstad sacrifice fly scored Epper before Matt Seidl singled in Serbus.
In the third inning, Larson led off with a single and a walk to Ethan Thompson ended Chamberlain’s night.
Reliever Greg Meidl came in and an Epper sacrifice bunt moved both runners up where Larson scored on a wild pitch.
VFW Gold broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth when Brock Wellmann led off with a single and a Parker Kamm sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position.
Finstad singled before Riederer laced a two-run triple for a 5-0 lead.
Riederer later scored on a Larson single.
