Area roundup: Chargers upset Bluejays, Knights shut out Mustangs

MVL 4, Waseca 0

WASECA — No 10-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran upset No. 7-seed Waseca in a shutout on Thursday in the first round of the Section 2AA Tournament.

Bradyn Kube and Josh Giefer combined for the shutout, combining to scatter eight hits and two walks while fanning four. MVL took an early 2-0 lead after Luke Thompson walked, Josh Giefer doubled and Zach Riederer had a two-run single.

Luke Thompson later scored on a passed ball after a leadoff hit in the fifth inning. A sac fly by Giefer in the seventh scored Cole Thompson for the final run.

MVL travels to second-seeded New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva for a second-round matchup Tuesday.

St. Mary’s 6, BLHS 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s shut out Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday in a first-round Section 2A playoff baseball game.

Brandon Schmitz got the win in all seven innings, giving up just one hits while fanning 12. Mark Anderson was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Knights, while Joey Herzog, Carson Domeier, Talan Helget and Schmitz each had a hit and an RBI.

Caleb Weispfenning took the loss for BLHS in six innings, giving up seven hits and four walks while fanning three. Chase Hubin had a double for BLHS’s lone hit.

The sixth-seeded Knights travel to take on third-seeded Springfield on Tuesday at Riverside Park.

Madelia 8, HLO/F 0

MADELIA — No 2-seeded Madelia defeated Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Thursday in the first round of the Section 2A baseball Tournament.

Dylan Grev was the winning pitcher. He pitched six innings and he gave up no runs on three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Eric Anderson pitched one inning of relief. He had no runs, no hits, two strikeouts and one walk.

Blake Altenburg was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Grev had a home run, Jake Altenburg had a double and Kaden Johnson also had a double.

Springfield 8, St. Clair 1

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield defeated St. Clair on Thursday in the first round of the Section 2A baseball tournament.

Jakob Nachreiner pitched a complete game for the win. He had one run on no hits, with four walks and eight strikeouts.

Kade Nachreiner went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Jakob Nachreiner went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Isaak Lothert went 2 for 3 with one run scored and an RBI. Sam Rummel had two runs scored.

The Tigers host St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

Prep softball

Nicollet 10, Sleepy Eye 0, 5 inn.

NICOLLET — Top-seeded Nicollet shut out eighth-seeded Sleepy Eye 10-0 in five innings on Thursday in the second round of the Section 2A Softball Tournament.

Hayley Selby led the Raiders at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two runs scored, while Marah Hulke was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Brooklyn Bode was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Leah Bode also had three RBIs.

Selby also got the win in all five innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Carmen Lendt and Brooke Arneson had Sleepy Eye’s hits.

Nicollet will take on fourth-seeded Springfield at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Caswell Park in a quarterfinals game. Sleepy Eye will play Madelia at 10 a.m. in an elimination bracket game at Caswell Park.

Springfield 2, Madelia 0

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield edged Madelia 2-0 on Thursday in the first round of the Section 2A softball Tournament.

Jaeli Richert earned the win for Springfield. She went seven innings and gave up no runs on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Brooklyn Strum went 1 for 3 with a run scored and Megan Ploeger went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Corban Tatro took the loss. She pitched six innings, gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks and struck out five.

St. Mary’s 15, MCW 0, 4 inn.

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s crushed Martin County West on Thursday in the first round of the Section 2A softball tournament.

Addie Hoffmann led the Knights by going 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Isabella Hoffmann went 2 for 2 , and Kya Krzmarzick went 1 for 2 with three RBIs.

Lacey Mathiowetz earned the win. She allowed no runs on three hits, she struck out five batters and she had no walks.

St. Mary’s (18-4) will play New Ulm Cathedral at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato in the Section 2A Tournament.
