Area roundup: Greyhounds, Raiders stay hot ahead of Section 2A playoffs

Cathedral 9, BLHS 1

STEWART — New Ulm Cathedral rolled to a 9-1 win over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday in Tomahawk Conference softball action.

Megan Haala got the win for the Greyhounds, who host Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in a Section 2A softball opening round game at 5 p.m. on Monday. Cathedral is the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

Megan Haala pitched three innings and gave up two hits and three walks while fanning five.

Madelyn Haala pitched the final four innings for Cathedral, giving up one walk and three hits while striking out six.

Kiah Helget was 2 for 4 with a home run to lead the Greyhounds at the plate, while Alexa Hornick was 2 for 4 with a double and Jenna Hotovec added a homer.

Alex Maiers took the loss for BLHS, giving up nine hits while striking out eight. She was also 2 for 3 with a double at the plate.

Nicollet 11, LCWM 2

NORTH MANKATO — Nicollet avenged a pair of defeats this season with an 11-2 win over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Friday in a Valley Conference Showcase softball game at Caswell Park.

LCWM gave Nicollet its only two losses this season.

On Friday, the bats were alive for the Raiders as Marah Hulke finished 3 for 3 with an RBI. Morgan Arndt, Leah Bode and Sam Kettner each went 2 for 4 also for Nicollet, with Kettner driving in three and homering. Tori Adams added a triple and an RBI for the Raiders.

Hayley Selby got the complete-game win for Nicollet, giving up five hits and no walks for two runs while striking out one.

Nicollet is the No. 1 seed in the Section 2A playoffs and will receive a bye on Monday when playoffs begin.

St. Mary’s 8, MLA/C 3

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s topped Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey on Friday in a nonconference softball game on Friday.

Julie Helget got the win for the Knights in the circle, striking out five while walking four and giving up five hits. At the plate, Kallie Zarn, Madeline Hose and Isabella Hoffmann each had a hit, with Hoffmann doubling and Zarn having three RBIs.

MLA/C committed 11 errors in the game, while St. Mary’s committed two.

The No. 3-seeded Knights open Section 2A playoffs on Monday when it hosts No. 14-seeded Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.

Madelia 8, Triton 1

NORTH MANKATO — Madelia cruised to an 8-1 win over Triton on Friday in a Valley Conference Showcase softball game at Caswell Park.

The Blackhawks were led by Abby Jacobs, who was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Emma Coil, Malia Schwanke and Ashlynn Sweet were also all 2 for 4 for Madelia, with Sweet and Schwanke driving in a run. Corban Tatro also had a hit and two RBIs.

Madelia, the No. 12 seed, travels to fifth-seeded Cleveland for a Section 2A playoff game on Monday.

Maple Grove 2,

New Ulm 0

MAPLE GROVE — Maple Grove topped New Ulm 2-0 on Friday in a nonconference baseball game.

Carter Lang took the loss on the mound, giving up nine hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out six. Maddox Mortensen and Jaden Miller each had a single for the Eagles.

New Ulm hosts Northfield for a nonconference game at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at Mueller Park.
