NEW ULM — Like a fine bottle of wine, the New Ulm Eagles baseball team is getting better with age.
Jaden Drill’s three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning sparked a five-run outburst as the Eagles erased a 5-1 Red Wing lead to win 6-5 Saturday afternoon at Mueller Park in a nonconference game.
It was New Ulm’s fourth straight win.
Carter Lang got the win for New Ulm, now 9-7. He went five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits and fanned six.
Jace Schaefer pitched the final two innings.

Mitch Seeley took the loss for Red Wing (7-5).
Drill and Ayden Jensen each had two hits for New Ulm, with one of Jensen’s hits a double. Drill drove in three runs.
“We did not play our best today, but we never quit,” New Ulm head coach Kevin Briggs said. “We came back from a 5-1 deficit and had a big inning. One swing of the bat can change a game.”
And that swing came in the home half of the fifth.
Down four runs, the Eagles started their rally quietly when Maddox Mortensen coaxed a walk off of Red Wing starter Will Hanisch.
Jack Albrecht followed up with a base hit to center that ended Hanisch’s mound time.
Seeley took over and with the count 1-0 to Drill, he threw a fastball that Drill deposited over the fence in right-center to cut the lead to 5-4.
Lang followed by reaching on a two-base error. He took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Jensen bloop double down the right field line to tie the game at 5.
Jensen tagged and went to third on a Taylor Hansen sacrifice fly and then scored on an Adam Wiltscheck suicide squeeze bunt for a 6-5 New Ulm lead.
Jace Schaefer then took over in the sixth and shut down Red Wing.
“He comes in and pounds the strike zone,” Briggs said of Schaefer. “He is not overpowering and he knows that, so he hits his spots — and mixes speeds. He is effective.”
Briggs is confident that the Eagles can continue to climb if they stay consistent.
“If we play well, we can beat anyone,” Briggs said. “We are facing better competition and that makes us better.”
The win was also satisfying to the Eagles and Briggs as members of the New Ulm High School 2002 Class AAA baseball team were at the game.
“It was a fun weekend and it meant a lot to me that the 2002 team was back to celebrate their 20th anniversary,” Briggs said. “They gave us a little momentum.”
New Ulm is at Marshall on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. Big South Conference game.
