MADELIA — Madelia’s JaSean Glover scored his 3,000th career point on Friday as the Blackhawks crushed Cleveland 79-39 in the first round of the Section 2A, South Subsection boys’ basketball tournament. He became the 13th boys’ basketball player to achieve that milestone in Minnesota.

Glover scored 31 points, he had 20 rebounds, 10 steals and six assists for the triple double. Hayden Jones had 22 points, and he hit four 3-pointers in the game. Josiah DeMaris added 9 points and Blake Altenburg scored 7 points.

Cleveland’s Luca Walechka was its top scorer with 12 points.

“It was great,” Glover said. “It was a lot of hard work; that’s how I got it. And, my teammates helped a lot.”

Glover grabbed a rebound when a teammate shot the ball and missed. He scored on a put-back with 3:50 left in the first half to achieve the milestone. His basket made it 39-14 in favor of the Blackhawks.

Four plays later, Glover hit a 3. Cleveland’s Walechka scored an inside basket, but Gover answered with another 3 on the Blackhawks’ next trip down the court. Glover also got a steal and he scored on a fast-break basket which made it 50-18 Madelia at halftime.

Madelia used a full-court press for most of the game. That strategy worked as the Blackhawks were able to score points off turnovers. Cleveland tried to use long passes to get past the press, but that worked with mixed results.

Cleveland opened the second half, scoring on back-to-back possessions. Blake Lyons scored on a lay-up and Walechka scored an inside basket.

Madelia responded with a 9-0 run. Glover started it with a basket. Jones scored, Glover rebounded a missed shot and he scored on a put-back. Altenberg’s 3 from the top of the key at the 3-point line gave the Blackhawks a 59-22 advantage.

Late in the second half, Glover hit a 3 and Anthony Zaleski added a 3 of his own. On Madelia’s final possession, Glover scored which made it a 78-39 final.

“For a small high school, you are just amazed at what he (Glover) can do,” Madelia head coach Jeff Van Hee said.

Van Hee called Glover someone who is engaging, he is a leader and he coaches the team in a lot of ways. He also credited Madelia’s seniors for being good role models.

“They’ve struggled with handling the press, and we knew that was their Achilles heel,” Van Hee said.
