Saints finish strong against NUA

NEW ULM — While New Ulm Area got off to a strong start in Tuesday night’s Big South Conference wrestling dual with St. Peter, the Saints picked up seven consecutive wins from 145 to 195 pounds to cruise ahead and finish with a 42-28 win at New Ulm High School.

St. Peter picked up the first win of the night at varsity after Brock Guth pinned Kane Johnson in 4:59. The Eagles answered with a pin of their own after Teagan Kral took Alex Dlouhy in the third period and cradled him for the win in 5:03.

Tied up at 6-6, NUA got another strong performance at 120 pounds Parker Kamm rolled to a 9-0 major decision over Charlie Born to put NUA ahead 10-6. Logan Lee then made short work of Deontre Torres at 126 pounds, pinning him in 50 seconds to give NUA the 16-6 lead.

Winsten Nienhaus picked up a 5-1 decision over Evan Walter to give the Eagles a 19-6 lead, but the Eagles ran into a wall of tough competition from there out, dropping seven matches in a row to fall behind.

Nakiye Mercado earned a 2-0 win over Marqavian Haefner in sudden victory at 138 before Taylen Travaille defeated Jamisen Frederickson 6-2. The Saints then got a pin from Harold Born over Wyatt Pollard at 152. The Saints got another pin at 160 after Brogan Hanson pinned Ryan Wiltscheck in 2:25 to take a 24-19 lead.

The hits kept coming for NUA as Cole Filand pinned Ty Frederick in 1:55 at 170, No. 6-ranked Kole Guth pinned Ethan Lieb in 1:16 at 182 and Leighton Robb pinned Dylen Carreon in 3:21 at 195.

Julian Hernandez was able to break the Saints’ winning streak at 220 pounds with a 4-0 decision over Oziel Hidago. After a scoreless first period, Hernandez got an escape and a takedown to lead 3-0. Hidago was penalized for stalling in the third period, leading to the final score.

Jaden Drill then ended the night with yet another quick pin at heavyweight, this time taking down and pinning Haadi Ahmed in a minute to give NUA fans something to cheer about before the night ended.

It was also Mental Health Awareness Night at NUHS. A moment of silence was taken before the JV matches.
