New Ulm Cathedral defeats Wabasso

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Wabasso 64-53 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

David Wilfahrt, Jr. led the Greyhounds with 24 points and four rebounds. Jevan Wilfahrt had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Knowles scored 11 points, he had 17 rebounds, five assists and five blocks.

“Different guys stepped up tonight,” Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas said. “Everyone contributed top to bottom. It was a team win.”

The Greyhounds got off to a fast start which forced Wabasso to play catch up for the entire game. Cathedral led by as many as 18 points. The score was 38-24 for Cathedral at halftime.

David Wilfahrt picked up where he started to open the second half when he hit a 3. He scored 5 of the first 7 Greyhound points to start the game.

Late in the second half, Wabasso’s Isaac Kronback’s basket cut the deficit to 8 points (59-51). Jevan Wilfahrt made two free throws which gave Cathedral a 10-point cushion.

Knowles’ rebounded a missed shot by Wabasso’s Kronback. Knowles was fouled, and he dropped in two free throws. Knowles blocked Karson Bock’s shot with 5.3 seconds left in the contest.

Jayden Goblish led the Rabbits with 23 points and Kronback scored 17 points.

Cathedral (11-6, 8-4) will host Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday. Wabasso (9-7, 5-5) will play at Springfield on Thursday.
