NEW ULM — Four players in double figures helped lift Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart to a dominant 76-27 win over New Ulm Cathedral on Monday in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action at Cathedral High School.

Emilie Hable led the Mustangs (9-3, 6-2) with 18 points, while Rachel Kottke had 17 points and Kristi Kottke and Madalynn Wulkan each had 15.

The Greyhounds (2-11, 0-10) were led by Emily Schommer’s 15 points, while Shay Wilfahrt had 6 points and four rebounds and Jenna Hotovec grabbed three rebounds.

The Mustangs took an early 8-0 lead before Schommer got the Greyhounds on the board with 12:44 left in the half. The Mustangs then answered with a bucket inside by Hable, who was also fouled and given another shot at the foul line.

She missed the free throw, but the Mustangs got the rebound and dished it back to Hable, who quickly put in another basket in the paint for a 12-2 lead. The Mustangs scored another pair of buckets to lead 16-2 before Wilfahrt got the Greyhounds back on the board on a basket inside.

A layup by Schommer and a baseline jumper by Wilfahrt had Cathedral down 18-8. Unfortunately for the Greyhounds, that 4-0 run was the largest run they got all game.

BLHS went on a 12-0 run to lead 37-12 before Schommer ended the run, but the Mustangs added two more buckets before the half to lead 39-14 at halftime.

The Mustangs started the second half with a 6-0 run on baskets by Allison Dornseif, Hable and Rachel Kottke before Schommer ended that brief run on a bucket inside. BLHS started to create several turnovers for points after Schommer’s basket, however, going on a 16-0 run to cruise ahead 61-16.

Schommer ended that run as well to have the Greyhounds down 61-18. The Mustangs led by as much as 51, 76-25, after an and-one by Ellaina Bergstrom before a basket in the paint from Cathedral’s Ava Krueger ended all scoring and led to the final score.

Cathedral travels to Morgan to take on Cedar Mountain on Thursday, while BLHS hosts Mayer Lutheran on Friday.
