Hockey Day New Ulm features 15 games this weekend

NEW ULM — If you are a local hockey fan, then the place to be this weekend is the New Ulm Civic Center.

Fifteen hockey games — beginning Friday night at 7:45 p.m. when the New Ulm Steel host Granite City in a NA3HL game — will be followed by 14 games beginning at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday as “Hockey Day New Ulm” gets going.

Friday night when Steel host Granite City, the game sponsor is the Liquor Mart of New Ulm. Five $25 gift cards to local restaurants will be drawn for during the game courtesy of the Liquor Mart.

It ends Saturday night at 7:10 p.m. when the Steel close out their weekend series against the Lumberjacks. Saturday night’s game sponsor is Schell’s Brewery and they will be giving out merchandise prizes.

Teams playing the 14-game schedule on two sheets of ice are the New Ulm Squirt “C,” New Ulm Squirt “B,” PeeWee “B,” Squirt “A,” PeeWee “A” and Bantam “B,” the 10U girls and the 12U girls.

All New Ulm teams will play Minnesota River teams, with the exception of the Squirt “A’s,” who will play Faribault and the Bantam “B’s,” who play River Lakes.

The New Ulm JV girls and varsity girls play at noon and 2:30 p.m., respectively, against Minnesota River in Big South Conference games.

The Eagles’ JV boys meet Minnesota River at 2 p.m., with the varsity playing at 4 p.m. on the Olympic sheet of ice.

At 4:15 p.m. on the regulation sheet of ice, the 10U girls play followed at 5:30 p.m. by the 12U girls.

At 6:45 p.m. the Bantam “A’s” play on the regulation sheet of ice and at 7:10 p.m., the Steel again meet Granite City.

All kids wearing a hockey jersey to the Steel game get in for free and will be able to skate with the Steel after their game Saturday.

There will also be a “Silent Auction” Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., for several large sports items.

“Each New Ulm/Sleepy Eye hockey team has put together a basket of goods that people can bid on,” Mike Peterson, New Ulm Director of Hockey Operations said. “We also have food, including sauerkraut and landjäegers. We also will have a skills contest from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Civic Center and the cost is $5 for players only. And we will have a “Chuck-A- Puck” contest on all games played only on the north rink between the second and third period.”

Players from the New Ulm boys’ and girls’ hockey teams will sign autographs after their games.

And the Tom Macho Award will be presented between the first and second periods of the New Ulm-Minnesota River boys’ hockey game.
