LUVERNE — The New Ulm girls’ hockey team opened its season on Tuesday with a 7-3 win over Luverne in Big South Conference action.

Eagles forward Julia Helget had a hat trick, with two goals in the second period and an empty-netter in the third. Afton Hulke, Jada Rahe, Mya Hornick and Malorie Anderson also each had a goal for New Ulm, while Madalyn O’Connor and Hulke each added two assists. Ava Brennan had 19 saves in goal for New Ulm.

New Ulm (1-0) is at Minnesota River on Thursday.
