NEW ULM — Oh! So close. Yet so far.

New Ulm fell 14-12 to Worthington on Wednesday in South Central District football action. It was the first win this season for the Trojans.

The Eagles came close to winning it late in the fourth quarter. New Ulm got the ball back on its own 28-yard line. Quarterback Ayden Jensen resorted to mostly an air-based offense as he had six passes with one keeper and a running play by Dylen Carreon.

A pass interference penalty on Worthington brought the ball to the Trojan 34-yard line. Jensen’s keeper kept the Eagles’ drive alive. With the football at the Worthington 16-yard line, Jensen scrambled right. He ran up the field and tried to throw the football. It was an important mistake because there was an illegal forward pass penalty called on the Eagles.

Carreon then took a shuffle pass from Jensen and he was able to make it to the Trojan 11-yard line, which made it fourth down and 4 yards to go. On the next play, Jensen kept the ball and tried to run for the first down or even a touchdown. The Worthington defense forced Jensen out of bounds which was short of the first down. The Trojans took over on downs at their own 11-yard line and ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Worthington’s quarterback Jake Brandner tossed the game-winning touchdown to Ayden Stugelmeyer for a 15-yard pass with 3:20 remaining in the contest. Triston Sauerbrei kicked for the extra point, which made it 14-12 for the Trojans.

New Ulm grabbed the lead when Jensen threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Tess with 11:03 remaining in the fourth period. Jensen hit Colton Benson with a pass for the two extra points and a 12-7 Eagle lead.

Earlier on, Carreon ran the ball in for a 4-yard touchdown with 7:37 left in the third quarter. Jensen handed the ball off to Carreon for the two-point conversion, but it was no good and the score was 7-6 for Worthington.

The Eagles hurt themselves in the first quarter when Andrew Dorcey intercepted a Jensen pass at the 50-yard line. The Trojans kept the drive going by keeping the football on the ground. They also took advantage of a face mask penalty on New Ulm. Brandner had back-to-back quarterback keepers. Brandner handed the ball off to Jacan Swinea who ran for an 11-yard touchdown run with :58 left in the first quarter. Sauerbrel’s kick was good and it was 7-0 for Worthington.
