NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral’s Eric Furth scored four touchdowns and New Ulm Cathedral closed out the regular season with a 47-0 Southwest District football win over Wabasso on Wednesday.

Cathedral closed out the regular season at 4-4 and will begin Section 2A play next Tuesday against an opponent to be determined. Wabasso finished the regular season 1-7.

Furth scored on runs of 12, 5, 61, and 1 for the Greyhounds. He finished the game with 16 carries for 150 yards. Levi Jakes had a 17-yard TD run in the third quarter and Levi Franta had a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Jakes finished with 16 carries and 160 yards and Franta had 27 yards rushing on six carries and he also was in on 11 tackles

Sam Knowles also threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jevan Wilfahrt in the first quarter.

That pass to Wilfahrt gave the Greyhounds a 7-0 lead with 5:08 left after Knowles found him wide open in the end zone.

Furth’s first touchdown came with 5:57 left in the second quarter to make it 14-0. Furth scored his second touchdown 4 minutes later to put the Greyhounds ahead 20-0, which is where it remained at halftime.

On the third play of the second half, Furth broke free on a 61-yard touchdown that put the Greyhounds ahead 27-0, and after a Wabasso punt, the Greyhounds went up 33-0 on Jakes’ 17-yard touchdown with 7:04 left in the third.

Cathedral kept up the third-quarter dominance after Wabasso was going to punt but the snap sailed high. The Rabbits recovered on their own 10 to force a turnover on downs, and Cathedral quickly capitalized, scoring three plays later when Furth ran it in from 1-yard out to make 40-0 with 2:09 left in the third.

Cathedral threatened to score one more time in the third, but got the ball down to Wabasso’s 1 as time expired. On the first play of the first quarter, Franta ran it in for the final 47-0 margin.

Knowles finished with 12 tackles and Thomas Finstad had 11 tackles. Justin Berg had six tackles and an interception.

Teams will be seeded for the playoffs on Thursday.
