Chargers make quick work of Rabbits

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran closed out its regular season in fashion, sweeping Wabasso 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match on Monday at Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School.

The Chargers finished the regular season with a record of 10-13 and they will begin Section 2AA playoff action next week at against a team yet to be determined.

Wabasso (7-14 overall), meanwhile, finishes its regular season on Tuesday night with a nonconference match against Westbrook-Walnut Grove and the Rabbits will begin Section 3A play next week.

The Chargers honored their seniors prior to the game and it was the seniors who stepped up big on Monday night. Kaylee Hunter led the way with 19 set assists and four kills and Sam Dalueg had 10 set assists and nine digs.

Abbie Riederer finished the match with 11 kills, seven digs, two blocks and two aces serves and Ella Schlei had nine kills and three blocks. Gabbie Bleick had eight kills for the Chargers.

Alivia Olson had 10 digs and eight kills for Wabasso and Kelsey Frank finished with 20 set assists, seven digs and five kills. Audrey Johnson had eight digs and Sara Carlson finished with seven digs. Natasha Doubler had six kills and Ashlyn Daub finished the match with five kills.

The Rabbits led briefly in the first set, 12-10, but the Chargers rallied mid-set and went up 16-14 on Bleick’s ace. They finished the set strong and won 25-20.

MVL rallied again in the second set, trailing 5-1 and 9-4 before putting it together. A pair of aces by Riederer gave the Chargers a 19-15 lead and the Rabbits were never able to get the lead back.

Wabasso rallied late in the third set after trailing 22-17, but the Chargers were able to hold off the comeback attempt for the victory.
