St. Mary’s crushes Southland

SLEEPY EYE — Carson Domeier had a total of seven touchdowns to lead the No. 4-ranked Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s past Southland 62-20 on Friday in 9-man, South District football action.

The Knights remain perfect with a 7-0 record.

The Knights amassed a total of 500 yards offensively.

Southland scored first on a 9-yard run with 8:54 left in the first quarter. The Rebels tried to kick for the extra point, but it was no good and they led 6-0.

St. Mary’s answered when Domeier scored his first touchdown on a 1-yard run. He kicked for the extra point and gave the Knights the lead at 7-6.

Domeier later tossed a 36-yard pass to a wide open Jake Heinrichs. Three plays later, Domeier threw 24 yards to Brandon Braulick for St. Marys’ next touchdown. Domeier’s kick for the extra point was blocked, making it 13-6 St. Mary’s.

Southland’s Bradley Lagerstedt fumbled on the ensuing kickoff. CJ Surprenant recovered for the Knights. The turnover proved costly for the Rebels when Domeier passed 26 yards to Kaleb Wait with 3:49 remaining in the second quarter. Wait caught the ball in the corner of the end zone. Domeier’s kick made it 20-6 St. Mary’s.

Three plays later, Harrison Hanna threw the ball to Brendan Kennedy. Kennedy cut across the field and he went 56 yards for a touchdown. Isaac Felten added the two-point conversion. The score was 20-14 for the Knights.

Domeier answered for St. Mary’s when he tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Wait. Domeier hit Owen Weiss for the two-point conversion and it was 28-14 St. Mary’s at halftime.

Hanna handed the ball off to Felten who ran 10 yards with 10:18 left in the third quarter. Jack Bruggeman’s kick went wide right and it was 28-20 St. Mary’s.

Domeier responded for St. Mary’s when he raced 61 yards, running through opposing players and picking up good blocking along the way. Domeier’s kick failed. The score was 35-20.

Steffensmeier ran 3 yards for another touchdown four minutes later. Domeier’s kick had the Knights ahead 42-20.

Domeier found Talan Helget for a 60-yard pass with 2:52 left in the third quarter. The Knights tried to get the two-point conversion, but it was unsuccessful. The score was 48-20 after three quarters.

Domeier ran 30 yards with 11:16 left in the fourth quarter. He scrambled out of the pocket and he took off running for the score. He kicked for the extra point and it was 55-20 St. Mary’s.

On the third play from scrimmage after Southland got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff, Helget recovered a fumble. He scooped up the football and he ran 17 yards for the TD. Domeier’s kick made it 62-20 for the Knights.

Domeier finished the contest with 343 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. He ran 101 yards and had three touchdown via the run. Braulick added 163 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

St. Mary’s (7-0) will travel to Danube to face Renville County West on Wednesday.
