NEW ULM — In a physical contest, New Ulm got two goals from Christian Edwards and advanced to the second round of the Section 2AA boys’ soccer playoffs with a 2-0 win over New Prague on Tuesday at New Ulm High School.
The win means New Ulm (10-7) will travel to Worthington on Thursday for a second-round match-up.
Edwards scored a goal late in the first half to break a scoreless tie, then added an insurance goal later in the second half. He said that New Prague came out to play, especially early in the first half.
“I thought it was a pretty evenly-balanced team,” Edwards said. “I feel like they wanted it a little more in that first 20 minutes, then we started to pick it up in the second part of the first half and we just really got it together as a team.”
Edwards’ goal with 6:55 left in the first half to give his team some breathing room.
“It felt great, it was a great pass from Dom and I was just able to finish it,” Edwards said.
While both teams seemed to play evenly in the second half, Edwards again found a loose ball in the second half and buried it for the two-goal advantage.
The Eagles now play unbeaten Worthington, a team they trailed 1-0 to last week before Worthington scored five times in the second half.
“Our stamina was good, the difference was the first half we played them, we stayed with them,” Edwards said. “Towards that last half, they scored all of their goals because we just ran out of stamina. They’re just a solid team with a lot of depth.”
