Steel rolls to big win over Loons

NEW ULM — New Ulm’s Gavin Brunmeier scored a natural hat trick in a five-goal, first period as the New Ulm Steel rolled to a 9-4 win over the Minnesota Loons Friday night in a NA3HL game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Max Rotsaert added two goals with Parker Dorn, Josh Delange, Marcus Mack and Bauer Barry each adding goals.

Braxten Hoffmann, Delange, and Barry each had two assists.

Steel goalie Nolan Lacosse stopped 25 of 29 Loons shots as New Ulm outshot the Loons 57-29.

The Steel, who play in Granite City Saturday night, got on the board just 25 seconds into the game when Rotsaert scored on a high wrist shot.

Brunmeier then scored the next three goals for New Ulm with his natural hat trick goal coming off an assist from Hoffmann.

Leading 5-0 after the first 20 minutes, Rotsaert made it 6-0 with a power play goal midway through the second period before the Loons cut it to 6-1. But Mack tallied a goal for a 7-1 second period cushion.

After the second Minnesota Loons goal of the game, New Um responded with goals from Dorn and Delange for a 9-3 lead after two periods.

The Loons added the lone third-period goal.

New Ulm is now 1-1 on the season.
