Searles downs Bluejays

NEW ULM — Searles’ right-hander Mark Schommer held Essig bats hitless for the first six innings and Searles took a 3-0 lead after two innings and went on to down the Bluejays 3-1 Saturday afternoon in a Region 2C elimination game at Johnson Park.

Schommer went the distance for the win, striking out 12 and holding the Bluejays bats to just four hits.

Hunter Sehr took the loss allowing three runs in a 1 2/3 innings.

Searles had just five hits in the game to four for Essig.

Searles now meets Hanska at 11 a.m. Saturday at Johnson Park in a Region 2C elimination game.

Searles grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Will Schabert walked and stole second. Collin Helget then coaxed a walk. A one-out walk to Kasey Kuck loaded the bases.

Schommer then helped his own cause with a two-run double.

Searles added a run in the second when Alex Lund singled and stole second. Schabert walked before Sehr hit Dan Reinke to load the bases and end Sehr’s day on the mound.

Eric Scheibel replaced Sehr and walked Kuck to force in a run.

Essig scored their lone run of the game in the fifth.

Kyle Helget walked, stole second and rumbled to third on a throwing error.

He scored on a Jay Helget sacrifice fly.

The Bluejays did threaten in the seventh inning when they placed runners on second and third but failed to score.

In the eighth back-to-back singles from Jake Stadick and Mason Sellner with one out were wasted when Schommer got the last two outs on fly balls.
