NEW ULM — Errors and a struggle to string together hits proved costly for the New Ulm Junior Legion Gold baseball team on Thursday night at Mueller Park.

After Junior Gold committed five errors and was outhit 10-4, Fairmont Post 36 ran away with a 9-2 win.

Junior Gold starter Anton Freiderich took the loss in four innings, giving up three hits and a walk for one earned run. He struck out four.

Jacob Crissinger got the win for Fairmont in five innings, allowing just two hits and a walk for no runs.

Fairmont got on the board first in the second inning after Levi Pooley, who walked to lead off the inning, scored from second on a pickoff attempt that went into center field. Eli Anderson scored another run for Fairmont in the fourth after what looked to be a base hit to right by Jack Kosbab ended up being a throw in and putout at first.

Three more runs scored for Fairmont in the fifth, one scoring on an error and two scoring on a two-run double by Kosbab. Fairmont added one more run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Landen Meyerdirk.

Junior Gold was finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth after Kyle Seidl walked and later scored on a wild pitch. Fairmont then added its final three runs in the seventh, getting a leadoff triple to right by Anderson, an RBI single by Kosbab and an RBI triple to right by Pooley. Pooley later scored on a passed ball.

Junior Gold managed to add one final run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI hit from Seidl, but back-to-back outs followed to end the game.

Gavin Epper had New Ulm’s first hit of the game, a leadoff single in the second inning, while Freiderich reached on an infield single later that inning. Ben Hohensee entered in the seventh and gave New Ulm its third hit of the game before Seidl drove in the team’s final run.

Junior Gold hosts Sleepy Eye VFW on Monday night at Mueller Park.
