New Ulm Amateur Baseball HOF to induct 4 members this Sunday at Johnson Park
NEW ULM — Two players and two non-players will be formally inducted into the New Ulm Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame this Sunday prior to the New Ulm Brewers-Springfield 5 p.m Tomahawk East League game at Johnson Park.
Players Ryan Walters and Chris Cariveau will join non-players Mike French and Bob “Biscuits” Scharf in the Hall of Fame.
Also, the late Herb Schaper will be honored by the New Ulm Baseball Association.
Schaper has been selected to receive the Glen Carlson Service Award this September by the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.
Family and friends of the inductees are asked to gather at 4 p.m. at Johnson Park, with the induction ceremony at 4:30 p.m. There is no formal banquet this year.
Here are the 2021 New Ulm Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame inductees.
PLAYERS
RYAN WALTERS
Walters posted a 33-4 record in seven seasons with the New Ulm Brewers and threw six shutouts. In 322 1/2 inning, the right-hander struck out 422 batters. In 2002 Walters went 8-1 with a 1.54 ERA. He followed that season up in 2003 with a 6-0 mark along and a 1.15 ERA. Walters’ career ERA was 2.12.
CHRIS CARIVEAU
Cariveau holds records that may never be broken. The right-hander has won more games (63), pitched more innings (829 2/3), and has made the most game appearances (169) than anyone else in New Ulm baseball history.
Cariveau was the winning pitcher in 2002 when New Ulm High School won the state championship. He was 5-0 for the Eagles that season.
Cariveau started his amateur baseball career in 2002 with the New Ulm Kaiserhoff. He was undefeated in 2014 and pitched a three-hitter in a state tournament win. He has seven complete game shutouts in his long career.
He has 526 strikeouts and a career ERA of 3.34.
These do not include his statistics for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons, which were were not available.
NON-PLAYERS
MIKE FRENCH
French was elected to the New Ulm Baseball Association in 2013 and has served with dedication in putting in many hours in the concession stand as well as behind the scenes.
French did play in 23 games for the Kaiserhoff in two years and had a two-home run game in Glencoe.
BOB “BISCUITS” SCHARF
Scharf served on the NUBA for 13 seasons from 2006 through 2018. And he was one of the most dedicated and hardworking board members in the history of the NUBA.
Scharf spent countless hours working the concession stands at both Johnson and Mueller Parks. He spent many hours ordering and reordering all of the concessions for both parks and would be there at all hours to open the gates for the delivery man. He stocked all of the coolers in both parks when needed.
Scharf’s dedication and loyalty was unsurpassed.
