New Ulm Red goes 1-2 at Windmill Classic

NEW ULM — Chatfield defeated New Ulm Red 9-5 in five innings on Sunday in the 18U division of the Windmill Classic Tournament at New Ulm High School.

The loss, which was New Ulm’s third game of the day and second loss of the tournament, eliminated New Ulm from the medal round.

Anna Lee drew a lead-off walk in the top of the first inning for New Ulm. She moved to second on Emily Guggisberg’s bunt single. Lee scored on a wild pitch.

Guggisberg scored later on a Chatfield shortstop error for a 2-0 lead.

Chatfield responded in its half of the first inning by scoring six runs to take the lead and command of the contest. A walk, two singles, an error, and a triple led to a 6-2 Chatfield lead.

A New Ulm shortstop error proved costly in the bottom of the second inning. Chatfield got a single to right field and that runner scored on that error. Chatfield got another run off a triple to right field for an 9-2 score after two innings.

Nicole Albrecht belted a single into right-center field in the top of the third inning. Albrecht scored later on Maddi O’Connor’s single to right field for an 8-3 score. Guggisberg walked and she also scored on O’Connor’s single, making it 8-4.

In the top of the fourth inning, New Ulm got three consecutive hits. Miranda Suess singled, Kassidi Gomez singled and Ella Landsteiner had an RBI double to have the score 9-5. New Ulm appeared to have some momentum, but the Chatfield defense regained it with an inning-ending double play.

In New Ulm’s morning game with the Norwood Young America Central Raiders, NYA Central won 8-1 in five innings. It was 3-2 going into the fifth inning, but NYA Central scored five runs, three earned.

Emily Schommer scored the only run after being hit by a pitch. She moved to third on a base hit by Gomez and scored on a wild pitch.

In the second game of the day, Red came from behind to beat Waconia 9-4 in five innings after a seven-run fifth inning.

Suess led off with a double. Gomez walked and Landsteiner tripled to score both players to tie it at 4-4.

Brenna Thordson’s sacrfice bunt scored Landsteiner for a 5-4 Red advantage. Bryanna Aschenbrenner singled and Murphy had a sacrifice bunt to move Aschenbrenner to second base. Nicole Albrecht’s triple brought in Aschenbrenner.

Lee’s double scored Albrecht. Lee scored the final run for Red on a wild pitch.
