Stull leads after first day at New Ulm Invitational

NEW ULM — Defending Championship Flight champion Lukas Stull fired a 70 on Day 1 of the New Ulm Invitational on Saturday, taking a four-stroke lead over Alex Wrocklage and Connor Power, who both finished with a 74 on the day.

Stull, a New Ulm Country Club golfer, finished with a 178 after last years competition, will go into Sundays play with a four-stroke lead. Wrocklage (University of Michigan Golf Course) and Power (Dakota Dunes Country Club) remain within striking distance for Sundays 27-hole event. All golfers will golf 18 holes and the Championship Flight will golf nine more following the initial 18 holes to declare a champion at the 61st Annual Event at New Ulm Country Club.

New Ulm Country Club member Brett Mathiowetz sits fourth in the Championship Flight with a 75.

Joe Nordahl has a six-stroke lead in the First Flight. He shot a Day 1 score of 75, ahead of Rob Geistfeld (81). Darren Anderson, Greg Schmitz and Alex Downs all finished Saturday with an 83 so theyre within striking distance.

Nate Voges of the New Ulm Country Club and Eric Hensler are co-leaders of the Second Flight as they both finished with a Day 1 score of 84. Corey Erickson sits two strokes back at 86, while Josh Holm and Bob Skillings, both of the NUCC, are tied for fourth at 89.

Peter Kliber leads the Third Flight with an 80, two shots ahead of Jeff Wesselmann (82). Todd Liebrenz (84), Joe Hoffmann (85) and Tim Berg (88) round out the Top 5 in that flight.

Gregg Holm will enter Day 2 with a two-stroke lead in the Fourth Flight Net Flight. He shot a 69, ahead of Rick Hulke (71), Jeff Kresh (72) and Gene Voges (73).

Randall Paa leads the Senior Championship Flight with a 79. He sits one stroke ahead of Todd McKeeth (80) and Dan Janke (82) is also in the mix. Brian Patterson, Tim Andersen and Jim Henning all sit at 83.

Brian Messer leads the Senior First Flight (68), followed by Pat McCall (70), Ken Paa (73) and Marc Redman (73). Mike Maloney sits atop the leaderboard in the Senior Second Flight with a 71. Jerry Meinders and Jerry Boddy both shot a 74.

Action will resume Sunday morning for all flights.
