NORTH MANKATO — Avenging a pair of earlier defeats to New Ulm Cathedral in May, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart shut the Greyhounds out 4-0 on Saturday in a Section 2A win-or-go-home softball playoff game at Caswell Park.

The win moved the No. 2-seeded Mustangs on in the elimination bracket. They will next meet Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Caswell Park.

The winner of that game will then play Nicollet right after at 7 p.m. for the right to play Springfield in the final round on Thursday.

The Greyhounds end their season with an 18-4 overall record.

The Greyhounds defeated BLHS 13-5 and 3-1 in a doubleheader this season on May 14, but the Mustangs got payback for the losses when it mattered most on Saturday.

After the top-seeded Greyhounds were bumped out of the winner’s bracket after a 9-6 loss to fourth-seeded Springfield earlier in the day, the loss moved them to a rematch with the Mustangs. BLHS downed Cleveland 5-2 earlier on Saturday to advance in the elimination bracket and play Cathedral.

After Cathedral starting pitcher Kiah Helget and BLHS starter Jadah Borth kept things quiet with four scoreless innings, the Mustangs struck in the fifth for two runs. Leslie Rodriguez led off the inning with a single and was later scored on a two-out RBI triple from Alex Maiers. Borth then singled in Maiers for a 2-0 BLHS lead.

Madalynn Wulkan and Allison Dornseif both walked to lead off the sixth. After Rodriguez singled with one out to fill the bases, Emilie Hable had a two-run double to give BLHS a 4-0 lead.

Borth held Cathedral to five hits and had eight strikeouts. She also only allowed a Cathedral runner to third twice during the game.

Kiah Helget gave up eight hits and had eight strikeouts in the loss. Lily Brennan, Kiah Helget, Emily Schommer, Sydnee Helget and Jenna Hotovec all had a single for Cathedral’s hits. Rodriguez led the Mustangs with three hits.

In the earlier loss to Springfield, Mohr led the Greyhounds with two hits, while Lily Franta had a homer and three RBIs.
