St. Mary’s takes down GFW 6-2

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 6-2 on Thursday in Tomahawk Conference softball action.

It was the fifth win in a row for the Knights and the loss snapped a two-game winning streak for GFW.

The Knights did all of their damage in the bottom of the third inning. Allie Labat drew a walk and Mya Nelson reached on a bunt single.

Sydney Windschitl then cracked a double to left field which scored Labat and Nelson for a 2-0 lead.

Megan Ahlness then hit a single. Emily Weiss belted a triple to center field that scored Windschitl and Ahlness, making it 4-0 Knights.

Julia Helget tripled to the right-field fence, which scored Weiss for a 5-0 St. Mary’s lead. Helget scored on a GFW error for the sixth run.

GFW’s two runs came in the top of the sixth inning. Jessica Willegal tapped a ground single into left field. Rylee Sabo drew a two-out walk. Hana Schroeder hit a triple to the right-field fence, scoring Willegal and Sabo for a 6-2 score.

St. Mary’s (7-5, 7-4) will play at Maple River on Friday. GFW (5-8, 4-8) will host Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday.
