New Ulm tennis team tops BEA
NEW ULM — Although the season is still young, the New Ulm boys’ tennis team is off to a good start and that run continued on Thursday.
The Eagles moved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-1 Big South Conference win over Blue Earth Area at New Ulm High School.
The Eagles took three of four matches at the singles competition and they swept the doubles side. New Ulm has won all three matches this year by a 6-1 score.
New Ulm’s Isaac Blumhoefer turned in probably the most dominant performance of the day at No. 1 singles, where the senior beat BEA’s Vern Johnson 6-2, 6-2. At second singles, Max Gieseke picked up a 6-4 win in the first set before turning it up in the second set to win 6-0 for the sweep.
Joey Gag kept the Eagles’ momentum going in the third set, picking up a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory at third singles. The Eagles had their only loss of the day at No. 4 singles, where BEA’s Jamie Johnson outlasted Ben Brownfield in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Once again, the doubles teams for New Ulm looked sharp. Nathaniel Janssen and Leo Waloch earned a 6-2, 7-6 victory at first doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Cody Gilman and Tate Trullinger picked up a quick 6-2, 6-1 victory and Isaac Davis and Dylen Carreon finished the doubles sweep with a 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 victory at third doubles.
New Ulm is at Waseca in another Big South Conference match today.
