Chargers move past TCU in Section 2AA

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran downed Tri-City United 57-42 on Thursday in Section 2AA, North Subsection boys’ basketball action.

MVL (13-4) is the No. 4 seed while TCU was the No. 5 seed. The victory means that the Chargers will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday against No. 1 seed Jordan.

There were a number of ingredients that came together to help MVL earn the win. The first was three Chargers scored in double figures. Luke Thompson had 20 points, Christian Edwards added 15 points and Layton Brau scored 10 points.

Second, MVL took advantage of 23 TCU turnovers for 10 points. The Chargers used a full-court press off and on throughout the game. MVL also double-teamed when possible, keeping the Titans off balance.

TCU and MVL played close for most of the first half. Fakourou Tandia’s 3-pointer gave TCU a 4-point lead early on. Edwards tied it at 9-9 on a fastbreak lay-up. He stole the ball on the next play for a 2-point MVL advantage. TCU’s Reggie Vosejpka tied it again. Later, Vosejpka scored for the final tie of the ball game.

Luke Thompson of MVL regained the lead on a 3. That shot put the Chargers in the driver’s seat. Thompson nailed back-to-back 3’s and Edwards scored a second-chance basket. Adam Henze scored for TCU and it was 31-20 MVL at halftime.

The teams played relatively even during the second half. The Chargers’ defense continued to hamper the Titans’ plan for a comeback. MVL outscored TCU 26-22 in the second half.

MVL made 20 of 54 shots for 37 percent from the field. From 3-point range the Chargers were 7 of 19 for 36 percent, and from the free throw line, they were 10 of 15 for 66 percent.

Vosejpka led the Titans with 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
