NEW ULM — Allison Milbrandt led Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart past New Ulm Cathedral 96-36 on Friday in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action.

Milbrandt scored 37 points for the Mustangs. Madalynn Wulkan and Jasmine Haugen each added 16 points while Kristi Kottke scored 13 points and Rachel Kottke had 10 points.

BLHS used a full-court press during the first half. It dropped the press but it kept up with a smothering defense for the entire game. This included double and triple teaming Cathedral ball-handlers. The result was creating headaches for the Greyhounds and leading to Mustang points.

Claire Olson was able to sneak behind the Mustang press, take a pass and score on lay-up early in the first half.

BLHS answered with a Wulkan two 3-pointers and a Rachel Kottke basket. Later, Kristi Kottke stole the ball and she scored on a lay-up. Two plays later, Wulkan passed the ball to Milbrandt who scored on a reverse lay-up. The score was 55-23 BLHS at halftime.

Milbrandt scored on another reverse layup at about the midway point of the second half. She hit another one two plays later.

BLHS rebounded well and it was able to execute its offense with teamwork and going after the basketball on loose ball plays.

Periodically, BLHS would rush shots or mishandle the ball. The Greyhounds worked hard to score, but they were never able to gain any momentum.

BLHS outscored Cathedral 41-13 in the second half.

Lily Franta led the Greyhounds with 13 points and Olson added 9 points.

Cathedral (0-8) will play at Cedar Mountain (0-9, 0-8) on Tuesday.
