New Ulm boys defeat Redwood Valley

Boys’ hockey

New Ulm 5, Redwood Valley 1

REDWOOD FALLS — New Ulm skated to a 5-1 victory over Redwood Valley in Big South Conference boys’ hockey on Tuesday.

Kyden Wenisch, Kadon Strong, Jace Addy, Keagan Schiro and Jacob Berg all scored a goal for New Ulm. Braxten Hoffmann had two assists and scored his 100th career point for the Eagles. Berg also had two assists.

Kyle Esser had 19 saves for New Ulm.

Boys’ basketball

GFW 65, Cedar Mountain 39

MORGAN — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop raced past Cedar Mountain 65-39 on Tuesday night in Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball action.

Damian Hopp hit six 3s for the Thunderbirds to lead with 20 points, while Johnnie Ambrose added 17 points and Dominic Henrichs added 13.

Nick Freitag led the Cougars with 13 points, while Devonte Charles added 7.

GHEC 74, Nicollet 45

GRANADA — Granada-Huntley-East Chain defeated Nicollet in a Valley Conference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Colton Thompson led Nicollet with 10 points and Grant Brunz scored 9. Dylan Willaert and Collin Bode each scored 8.

Nicollet (5-5, 3-4) hosts Legacy Christian on Friday.

Girls’ basketball

St. Mary’s 96, Wabasso 37

SLEEPY EYE — Sydney Windschitl scored 22 points, had nine rebounds, three assists and six steals as St. Mary’s defeated Wabasso in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

Regan Severson had 19 points, three assists and two assists and Madison Mathiowetz had 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Sophie Portner had nine points for the Knights.

For Wabasso, Sarah Franta finished with 10 points and Kelsey Frank scored 8 points. Avery Carlson had 7 points.

St. Mary’s is at Springfield on Thursday and Wabasso hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday.

GFW 49, CM 36

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated Cedar Mountain in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Brynn Busse led all scorers with 26 points. Abby Heimkes had 9 points and 12 rebounds. Cedar Mountain was led by Megan Sandgren’s 13 points.

Springfield 65, RRC 52

SPRINGFIELD — Brooklyn Sturm scored 26 points, had five rebounds and three assists as Springfield defeated Red Rock Central in a nonconference girls’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Courtney Wendt had 10 points and seven rebounds and Lilly McCone had 10 points for the Tigers.

For RRC, Lily Stavnes had 18 points and Nicole Schroepfer and Karli Arkell each had 12 points.

Springfield (6-3) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday.

St. Clair 69, Nicollet/Loyola 52

ST. CLAIR — St. Clair defeated Nicollet/Loyola in a Valley Conference girls’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Marah Hulke led the Raiders with 15 points and Brooklyn Bode had 13 points. Hayley Selby finished with 8 points.

Nicollet is at Madelia on Thursday.

Prep gymnastics

New Ulm 134.95, St. James Area 100.25

ST. JAMES — New Ulm downed St. James Area 134.95-100.25 on Tuesday night in a Big South Conference gymnastics meet.

New Ulm swept every event and were led by Kayla Goblirsch, who took first all-around (34.174), first on the beam (8.65), second in the vault (8.575), second on bars (7.95) and second on floor (9.0). Ella Friederich finished first on floor (9.275), second on the beam (8.55, and third on bars (7.85) for New Ulm, while Olivia Eckstein finished first in the vault (8.7) and Josie Sellner took first on bars (8.125).

Emily Guggisberg took third on the beam (8.25) for New Ulm, while Laura Bertrang and Anna Schwartz tied for third in the vault (8.55).

New Ulm hosts Blue Earth Area at 6 p.m. Friday.

Prep wrestling

Minneota 69, Wabasso 6

MINNEOTA — Wabasso’s Tyler Bliss earned a pin at 182 in 38 seconds, but Minneota defeated Wabasso in prep wrestling action on Tuesday.
