Area roundup: New Ulm girls get past Sibley East in OT

New Ulm, Sibley East

ARLINGTON — The New Ulm High School girls’ basketball team rallied to defeat Sibley East 67-58 in overtime on Tuesday in nonconference action.

Daviney Dreckman led the Eagles with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Kirsten Dennis added 17 points. Eighth-grader Morgan Hulke had 15 points off the bench for New Ulm. Another eighth-grader, Ramsey Hopp, had five rebounds for the Eagles and hit a 3 with five seconds left to send the game to overtime.

New Ulm (1-1) is at Blue Earth Area on Friday night.

MVL 79, Cedar Mountain 48

MORGAN — Minnesota Valley Lutheran picked up a 79-48 Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball victory over Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.

The Chargers were led by Abbie Riederer’s 30 points and six steals, while Kaylee Hunter added 13 points and five assists. Also for MVL, Naomi Anderson and Rylee Woller added six rebounds each.

The Cougars were led by Megan Sandgren’s 12 points, while Madison Heiling added 6 points.

Cedar Mountain (0-1) is at Sleepy Eye on Jan. 29, while MVL (2-0) is at Wabasso on Thursday.

St. Mary’s 77, Springfield 33

SLEEPY EYE — Madison Mathiowetz’s 36-point, 11-rebound double-double helped lead Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s to a 77-33 Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball win over Springfield on Tuesday.

Mathiowetz also added four assists and four steals for the Knights, while Syndey Windschitl had 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Reagan Severson also had 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Springfield was led by Maddy Diggmann’s 7 points, while Courtney Wendt had 6 points.

St. Mary’s (2-0), hosts Gibbon-Fairax-Winthrop on Thursday, while Springfield (0-1) hosts Sleepy Eye on Friday.

Nicollet/Loyola 52, MCW 40

NICOLLET — Nicollet/Loyola defeated Martin County West 52-40 on Tuesday night in a Valley Conference girls’ basketball game.

Hayley Selby led the Raiders with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Marah Hulke had 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and seven steals. Brooklyn Bode added 7 points for the Raiders, while Sam Rist added 10 boards.

Nicollet/Loyola plays at Cleveland Friday.

Wabasso 53, GFW 37

WINTHROP — Wabasso defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 53-37 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

Wabasso was led by Sarah Franta’s 26 points.

The Thunderbirds were led by Brynn Busse’s 12 points.

Wabasso hosts MVL on Thursday, while GFW is at St. Mary’s on Thursday.

Boys’ Basketball

St. Mary’s 80, Springfield 60

SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s downed Springfield 80-60 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

The Knights were led by Trent Steffensmeier’s 24 points, while Carson Domeier added 23 points. Kaleb Wait added 11 points for the Knights.

The Tigers were led by James Coffland’s 14 points, while Brendon Buerkle added 12 points and Caleb Hauger had 10.

Springfield hosts Sleepy Eye on Thursday, while St. Mary’s is at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday.

Madelia 78, St. James Area 63

MADELIA — Ja’Sean Glover’s 44-point, 10-rebound double-double lifted Madelia to a 78-63 win over St. James Area on Tuesday night in Valley Conference boys’ basketball action.

Ethan Arndt also had a double-double for the Blackhawks with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Madelia (1-1) hosts Mayer Lutheran on Thursday.

Nicollet 55, Sleepy Eye 48, OT

SLEEPY EYE — Nicollet got by Sleepy Eye 55-48 in overtime on Tuesday night in a nonconfernece boys’ basketball game.

The Indians were led by Erizen Traconis’ 20 points, while Kegan Heiderscheidt added 13 points. Mason Sellner also chipped in 11 points for the Indians.

No state were submitted for Nicollet.

Sleepy Eye hosts Springfield on Thursday, while Nicollet is at Mankato Loyola on Thursday.

Prep Wrestling

Wabasso 60, Paynesville Area 15

PAYNESVILLE — The Wabasso wrestling team defeated Paynesville Area 60-15 in a prep wrestling dual on Tuesday night.

Picking up wins for the Rabbits were Kaysem Harms (106, 10-9 Dec.), Mikale Goblirsch (113, For.), Adryen Tietz (126, Fall 3:13), Garret Marotzke (138, forf.), Chase Irlbeck (152, Fall 5:08), Ty Altermatt (160, For.), Carter Benz (170, Fall 3:26), Tyler Bliss (182, Fall 3:20), Sam Welch (195, For.), Hunter Taylor (220, 3-2 Dec.) and Jaxon Fischer (285, For.).

KMS 72, Madelia/T/ML 9

Quad County 60, Madelia/T/ML 6

GRANITE FALLS — Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther dropped a pair of prep wrestling duals on Tuesday, falling to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 72-9 and Quad County 60-6.

Picking up wins for Madelia against KMS were Gach Mar (145, Fall 3:37) and Logan Slater (160, 8-2 Dec.). Picking up Madelia’s lone win against Quad County was Gach Mar (145, Fall 1:43).
