St. Mary’s sweeps MVL, GFW sweeps Sleepy Eye

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept Minnesota Valley Lutheran 25-21, 25-14, 25-18 on Thursday in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

The first set was played evenly by both squads. MVL’s middle hitters played aggressively and they made some solid hits.

St. Mary’s made a number of defensive adjustments hoping to slow down MVL’s middle hitters in the second set. Late in the set, MVL made some mistakes which hurt its chances for a comeback.

MVL led for a portion of the third set. An MVL player knocked the ball out of bounds to tie it at 6-6. MVL had a net serve to give St. Mary’s a lead that it would not relinquish. Emily Weiss made a tip for the Knights which was followed by consecutive kills by Madison Mathiowetz. An unforced MVL error increased St. Mary’s advantage to 15-10. Later, Reagan Severson tipped the ball over the net for another point. Mathiowetz scored St. Mary’s two final points on strong, solid kills.

Kaylee Hunter led MVL with 14 set assists and 11 digs. Mikayla Bendix had 13 digs while Abbie Riederer added five kills with 11 digs. Ella Schlei had seven kills and two blocks. Lili Mohror had nine kills and two blocks.

Mathiowetz had 15 kills and 12 digs for St. Mary’s. Sydney Windschitl added 12 digs, Bella Hoffmann had nine digs and 12 set assists. Allie Hoffmann added 22 set assists with four digs, Jaci Domeier had eight kills and five digs. Emily Weiss had six digs and two kills.

MVL ends its season with a 3-9 overall record and it was 2-4 in the Tomahawk Conference. St. Mary’s record is 10-1 and it hosts Sleepy Eye on Friday.

GFW 3, Sleepy Eye 0

SLEEPY EYE — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop swept Sleepy Eye 25-11, 25-19, 25-20 in Tomahawk Conference action on Thursday.

Hannah Thorsen led GFW with 13 set assists, 10 digs and nine kills and Julia Schweiss had eight kills and three blocks. Brynn Busse finished with seven kills, 17 set assists and two blocks and Jaedan Nachreiner had 18 digs. Hana Schroeder finished with 15 digs.

McKenna Stong led Sleepy Eye with 15 kills and 10 digs and Emma Schieffert had six kills and 10 digs. Brooke Arneson had 27 set assists and 12 digs.

GFW hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Friday and Sleepy Eye is at St. Mary’s on Friday.

Springfield 3, Cathedral 0

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield swept New Ulm Cathedral 25-23, 25-17, 26-24 on Thursday in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

For Springfield, Courtney Wendt had 11 kills, three blocks and 14 digs and Cylee Graff had seven kills, two blocks and six digs. Tori Roiger had two ace serves, 14 set assists and five digs and Lexi Groebner finished with eight kills and two blocks. Jaeli Richer had an ace serve and 18 set assists and Bri Rasmussen had 18 digs. Brooklyn Sturm finished with eight kills and seven digs.

For Cathedral, Emily Schommer had 31set assists and Sarah Mohr had 19 kills and 14 digs. Lily Franta finished with 15 digs and Sydnee Helget had eight kills.

Cathedral is at GFW on Friday.

Wabasso 3, CM 1

WABASSO — Wabasso defeated Cedar Mountain 25-16, 25-17, 13-25, 25-17 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball game on Thursday.

Kelsey Frank had 21 set assists, 11 digs and nine kills for the Rabbits. Emma Salfer had 11 kills and four blocks and Halle Huhnerkoch had nine kills and five ace serves. Avery Carlson had seven digs.

For Cedar Mountain, Hailey Hollar led with 10 kills and 20 digs. Teresa Larsen had six kills and Megan Sandgren had five kills. Mykenna Vollmer had four kills, eight digs, and nine set assists. Nadia Meyers had 12 set assists, 11 digs, and 3 kills. Morgan Engholm had 18 digs while Makalya Steffensmeier added 13 digs.

LCWM 3, Madelia 0

MADELIA — Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial defeated Madelia 25-15, 25-20, 25-23 in a Valley Conference volleyball game on Thursday.

Brooke Lensing had 11 kills for Madelia and Corban Tatro had nine digs. Dora Facundo had eight digs and Naomi Haedt finished with 22 set assists.

Madelia (4-7) hosts Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Friday.
