Mankato East runs wild over New Ulm

MANKATO — Mankato East needed just three plays to score in Tuesday’s Section 2AAAA contest at Mankato East.

And the Cougars kept going and going, putting up 58 points in a 58-0 victory over New Ulm on Tuesday in the first round of the playoffs.

The loss ends New Ulm’s season at 1-6.

Ethan Sundermeyer had four rushing touchdowns and 171 yards for East and Jared Grams also had two. Jacob Eggert had touchdown passes of 60, 65 and 38 yards for the Cougars.

Cole Ranweiler had 88 yards rushing on 19 carries for New Ulm and Dylan Carreon finished with 85 yards rushing on eight carries.

Grams opened the scoring with a 65-yard run on the third play from scrimmage for the Cougars to make it 7-0 after the PAT. Sundermeyer then broke loose on a 74-yard run to put the Cougars ahead 15-0 after the 2-point conversion was converted.

East added to the lead in the second quarter after Sundermeyer scored on a 7-yard run to make it 21-0 and Grams scored a 65-yard touchdown for the 29-0 lead with 3:05 left in the first half.

The Cougars scored another touchdown just before halftime when Sundermeyer ran one in from 6-yards out and East led 37-0 at the half.

Sundermeyer added to his big night with a 60-yard scoring run in the third quarter to make it 44-0 and the Cougars scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass for the 50-0 advantage.

Defensively for New Ulm, Connor Slette had five tackles and Brayden Gearity had an interception and six tackles.
