Cathedral makes quick work of Cedar Mountain

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral swept Cedar Mountain 25-14, 25-14, 25-22 on Monday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.
The two teams played relatively even throughout the first set. The Greyhounds took the lead 11-10 on a block at the net. A few players later a Cathedral player knocked the ball out of bounds for CM’s final point of the set. The Greyhounds put together an 8-0 run to take the set.
Cathedral jumped out to a 14-4 advantage in the second set. The Greyhounds made key plays when they needed by doing a good job of moving the ball around which led to points. Cathedral put together run of 6-2 and a Greyhound had a solid kill to win the set.
The Cougars refused to quit in the third set. It was close for most of it with there being several ties and lead changes. The Cougars closed the gap to 23-21 when a CM dropped the ball between two Cathedral defenders. Cathedral had an unforced error to cut the deficit to 23-22.
Emily Schommer passed to Lily Franta who tipped it over the net for a 24-22 lead. A Greyhound player slapped the ball over the net for the set and match point.
Schommer had 35 set assists with 19 digs for the Greyhounds. Sydnee Helget had 16 kills, Megan Haala added 15 digs with seven kills and Franta had 21 digs. Sarah Mohr also had seven kills.
CM’s Nadia Meyers had 14 set assists with 12 digs. Morgan Engholm had 22 digs, followed by Hailey Hollar and Makenna Vollmer each had 12 digs.
CM will travel to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday. Cathedral will travel to Springfield on Thursday.
