Cathedral drops Sleepy Eye in 4 sets

SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm Cathedral downed Sleepy Eye 25-15, 25-13, 22-25, 25-23 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

The fourth set looked good for Sleepy Eye with the Indians holding a 20-12 lead. It started out relatively even before Sleepy Eye put together a 9-2 run. The Greyhounds made some mistakes which Sleepy Eye used to its advantage.

Cathedral continued to keep itself in the match tying it at 23-23. A Greyhound front line block at the net broke the tie. A Sleepy Eye player’s miscue gave Cathedral the set point and the match.

Sleepy Eye did a very good job of setting up its offense and getting good returns of the ball in the third set. It put together a 9-0 run for a 14-5 lead. The Indians kept their momentum and the Greyhounds at bay. Cathedral battled back to tie it at 22-22. Megan Haala missed the ball to give Sleepy Eye back the lead. Back-to-back miscues by Cathedral players gave Sleepy Eye the set.

Cathedral did an excellent job of moving the ball around and making good plays throughout the second set. Lily Brennan’s block at the net helped Cathedral to build a 10-1 lead. Sydnee Helget’s soft tip and an ace serve added 2-points to Cathedral’s advantage. Kadence Hesse missed the ball at the net for Cathedral’s winning set point.

The first set was close for most of it with neither team leading by more than 4 points. Cathedral put away the set with a 12-5 run. Helget got the winning point with a block at the net.

Emily Schommer led Cathedral with 53 set assists. Helget had 23 kills and 4.5 ace blocks. Lily Brennan added 15 kills with 16 digs and Lily Franta had nine kills with 32 digs.

Cathedral will host Cedar Mountain on Tuesday while Sleepy Eye will go to St. Mary’s to face cross-town rival St. Marys on Tuesday.
