Sleepy Eye crushes New Ulm Cathedral

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye defeated New Ulm Cathedral 38-14 on Friday in a Southwest District football game.

Sleepy Eye drew first blood when Jackson Huiras handled the ball off to Trey Heiderscheidt for the touchdown. Huiras ran the ball in for a 2-point conversion and an 8-0 Indian lead with 5:36 left in the first quarter.

Cathedral answered when Sam Knowles tossed a 23-yard touchdown to Jacob Berg in the corner of the end zone. It came on a fourth down play. Justin Berg kicked the extra point, making 8-7 Sleepy Eye.

On the first play of the second quarter, Kegan Heiderscheidt threw a 65-yard pass to Huiras. Hurias was wide open and he still scored despite being slowed down by a Cathedral defender. Heiderscheidt tried to pass for a 2-point conversion, but it was incomplete.

Cathedral avoided trouble when Knowles lost control of the football on the snap from the center, but Knowles recovered it.

Knowles threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Berg with 6:45 remaining in the second quarter. Justin Berg kicked the extra point, tying it at 14-14.

Later, Kegan Heiderscheidt pitched the football to Jackson Huiras who threw to Mason Sellner for a 27-yard gain.

That set up Kegan Heiderscheidt running up the right side for a 6-yard touchdown run with 11.7 seconds remaining in the first half. Huiras weaved through some Cathedral defenders for the 2-point conversion for a 22-14 halftime lead.

Sleepy Eye took possession at midfield on a Cathedral punt. Three plays later, Kegan Heiderscheidt bobbled the snap, kept his composure and he tossed a 40-yard touchdown pass to a wide-ope Jackson Huiras. Heiderscheidt threw to Sellner for the 2-point conversion and a 30-14 lead.

Sleepy Eye took possession on downs. The Indians kept the ball on the ground with Kegan Heiderscheidt handing the ball off to Trey Heiderscheidt who took the ball to the 10-yard line. Kegan Heiderscheidt gave the ball to Hurias who evaded Greyhound defenders and diving into the end zone for a touchdown. Kegan Heiderscheidt threw the ball to Sellner for the 2-point conversion.

Berg of Cathedral had three receptions for 38-yards and two touchdowns. Sam Knowles went 4-for-7 for 75-yards and two touchdown passes.

Luke Mages led the Greyhounds with nine tackles and Knowles added seven tackles.

Cathedral will host Springfield on Friday while Sleepy Eye will play at Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Friday
