Fischer takes first at Section 2A meet

MONTGOMERY — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral girls’ cross-country runner Clare Fischer took first overall at the Section 2A meet at Montgomery on Tuesday.

Fischer won the event in 19:56.58 to lead the Knights, who finished 15th overall with a score of 373.

GFW was third overall with a score of 112. MVL was 14th (362), SM/SE/NUC was 15th (373) and M-T was 18th (497).

Grace Feder led GFW, finishing third overall in 20:28.64. Beth Feder was 11th overall in 21:40.61.

For MVL, Naomi Anderson took 46th in 23:39.97 and Pricilla Bauer was 56th in 24:05.2.

The Minnesota Valley Lutheran boys’ cross country team took 12th overall with 314 points.

Sleepy Eye St. Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral was 13th with a team score of 322, Madelia-Truman was 14th with 327 points and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop was 19th with 507 points.

Leading the way for the Chargers was Mitchell Ulrich, who finished 34th in 19:18.99. His teammate Josiah Guenther finished 49th in 19:49.21. Nate Fliszar of SM/SE/NUC was 19th overall in 18:39.4 and his teammate Joshua Hagen was 20th in 18:39.56. M-T’s Josiah Demaris was 27th overall (18:53.55) and GFW’s Evan Elder took 31st (19:11.59).

Prep volleyball

New Ulm 3, St. James Area 2

ST. JAMES — New Ulm defeated St. James area 27-25, 20-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-12 in a Big South Conference volleyball match on Tuesday.

For the Eagles, Riley Melby had 11 kills and Natalie Yackley had 41 set assists, 10 digs and six kills. Nicole Albrecht had 21 digs and two ace serves and Maddi O’Connor finished with 15 kills and 10 digs. Ella Landsteiner finished with two ace serves, 11 kills and four digs and Ella Bertrang had six kills and two blocks. Ella Freiderich also had six digs.

New Ulm (2-1, 2-0) hosts St. Peter on Thursday.

BLHS 3, MVL 0

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 25-14, 25-13, 25-22 on Tuesday in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

For BLHS, Allison Dornseif had 24 set assists and recorded her 1,000th career set assist. Allison Milbrandt had 10 kills and Kristi Kottke had seven kills.

For the Chargers, Abbie Riederer had 10 kills and 13 digs and Sam Daleug had 21 set assits.

MVL (1-3) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

GFW 3, Springfield 0

SPRINGFIELD — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated Springfield 25-14, 25-17, 27-25 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

For the Thunderbirds, Julia Schweiss had 13 kills and Hannah Thorsen had 17 set assists. Brynn Busse had 16 set assists, 18 digs and nine kills and Hana Schroeder had 19 digs.

GFW hosts Sleepy Eye on Tuesday and Springfield hosts Sleepy Eye on Thursday.

Cedar Mountain 3, Sleepy Eye 0

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain picked up its first win of the season with a 25-19, 26-24, 25-19 victory over Sleepy Eye on Tuesday.

Teresa Larsen led the Cougars with 13 kills and Nadia Meyers had 11 kills. Hailey Hollar finished with 10 kills. Morgan Engholm had 21 digs and Mykenna Vollmer and Makayla Steffensmeier each had 16 digs apiece. Meyers also had 20 set assists and Hollar finished with 17 assists.

Kadence Hesse had nine kills and seven digs for Sleepy Eye and McKenna Strong had six hills and four digs.

Cedar Mountain is at Wabasso on Tuesday and Sleepy Eye is at Springfield on Thursday.
