Eagles dominate Loyola with 5-1 win

NEW ULM — New Ulm returned to the win column with a 5-1 win over Mankato Loyola on Friday in a Big South Conference girls soccer match.

The Eagles kept the pressure on Loyola, not allowing them to even get a shot on goal early in the first half.

Paige Kalis scored New Ulm’s first goal with 29:50 remaining in the first half. Bryn Nesvold and Mia Johnson assisted Kalis on the goal for a 1-0 Eagle lead. Kalis’ goal set the school scoring record with 55 career goals.

Paige Fredrick scored the Eagle’s second goal at 15:34 after their offense moved the ball up the field. Nesvold and Johnson assisted Frederick. There was a scramble in front of the net on the goal with the ball bouncing off the legs of several players from both teams.

Loyola goalkeeper Paige Olinger mishandled the ball on the third goal, which resulted in Lydia Hartwig getting the ball from Ann Howard and Hartwig scored for a 3-0 Eagle halftime advantage.

Unofficially, New Ulm had 14 total shots on goal while Loyola had none in the first half, and one in the second. Kendra Nesvold was the goalie for the Eagles.

Loyola scored its lone goal with 32:05 remaining in the contest. Lexi Breuer made a corner kick. Players were jostling for possession of the ball when Addie Ahern got the ball and she scored.

New Ulm answered with 20:08 left. Kalis took a nice clearing pass and broke free down the side of the field. She centered the ball to Nesvold who scored for a 4-1 lead.

On the fifth goal, the Eagles advanced the ball down the field. Nesvold kicked the ball, but it missed the net. Howard was in front of the net, got the rebound and she scored with 12:45 left.

New Ulm (4-3) will play at Loyola on Tuesday.

Eagles boys beat Loyola

MANKATO — The Eagles Boys soccer team equaled the girls’ offensive output, defeating Mankato Loyola 5-2 on the Mankato pitch.

Joey Goeglein scored an unassisted goal to start New Ulm off, and assisted on two others.

Christian Edwards was unassisted on the Eagles’ second goal.

Joey Gag, scored nest, assisted by Isaac Blumhoefer . Edwards scored again, assisted by Goeglein, and Jordan Ritchsmeier got the final goal on an assist by Goeglein.

Ethan Lieb had five saves for the Eagles.

In the JV match, New Ulm topped Loyola 4-0.
